He currently lives and works in Berlin and Los Angeles, and teaches at the University of Fine Arts, Hamburg. Demand is known for making photographs of three-dimensional models that look like real images of rooms and other spaces, often sites loaded with social and political meanings. He thus describes himself not as a photographer, but as a conceptual artist for whom photography is an intrinsic part of his creative process.".

Originally trained as sculptor, Thomas Demand approaches photography as a means of preserving his painstakingly created, ephemeral paper constructions. At no time do his forms strive for the perfect illusion, his is a wholly artificial world reduced to generic forms. Large immaculate photographs of interiors and architectural exteriors - a world peopled with inanimate objects and bathed in uniform lighting - are mounted on Plexiglass, which underscores the materiality of the photographic object. For each of his reproductions, Demand constructs life-size models using paper and cardboard. Like new. Record # 372195.

Like many of his contemporaries, his work investigates the nature and process of photography while exploring the role of the media in our culture. Demand begins his process with images of highly charged locations, usually interiors. He obtains these images from a variety of sources, including newspapers, the Internet, and even his own memory. Demand then builds life-size paper and cardboard models of these places, which in turn become the 'subjects' of his large-scale photographs. While the artificiality of these images may not be immediately apparent, upon detailed examination, one can see that details are missing (like light switches), and everything has a hint of peculiarity. In describing his work, Demand has said, 'The surroundings that I portray are, for me, something untouched - a utopic construction. The Triple Folly presents the rich collaboration between artist Thomas Demand, architects Caruso St John, and textile makers Kvadrat which produced an astonishing new pavilion for Kvadrat?s Ebeltoft campus. The basis of the building is three found paper objects ? a legal pad, a paper plate, and a soda jerk hat ? which Demand brought to Caruso St John with the simple question: ?Can you make this into architecture?? In response, the architects created a sculptural tripartite folly, a kind of inhabitable still life poised on the area?s rolling seaside hillocks, encompassing a meeting room, a kitchen, and a flexible living space which holds a textile work by the artist Rosemarie Trockel.0Inspired by Kvadrat?s role as a celebrated textile producer, Demand initially pursued the idea of the tent as an archetypal architectural structure with many iterations across contexts of leisure and shelter, simplicity and grandeur. Translating these concepts into his own artistic idiom of paper, he tasked Caruso St John with materialising this lightness of form, with a touch of his distinctive, duplicitous whimsy. The final building, completed in September 2022, achieves this through a harmonious sequence of steel and fibreglass structures which create their environments through the fall of light and shadow, textured opacity and welcoming transparency.
