The Pays des Pierres Dor?es, in Bas Beaujolais, conceals a treasure. It is buried for the most part under this fine building material, in other layers which geologists call Lower Aalenian or Toarcian. It s a treasure. Leafing through this book and its superb plates is enough to convince yourself of this: they are in particular some of the most beautiful and diversified fossils that can be found on the same site. They have a triple power of seduction. They arouse curiosity, whether that of the layman or that of the paleontologist. They respond to our need for beauty and authenticity. They invite us to meditate on time, duration, evolution, and on the human condition which is put into perspective. This book reveals in detail the marine animals that populated this geographical area some 200 to 166 million years ago, as found and studied by fervent amateurs relayed by competent scientists. It also presents the geological series in which their fossils are recorded, and the mineral crystallizations that accompany them. This exceptional openness to the past and to aspects of nature that usually escape our attention is offered to us by a site, the Val d Azergues, and more particularly by the quarry exploited for sixty years by the Lafarge company. It was also necessary for the operator not only to tolerate but, what is more, to promote the research that led to all these discoveries. We can speak of real collaboration, materialized by an Association in close ties with the company. The first part of this book sets out the procedures for choosing the site, then the operation and management of the quarry, where a concern for the environment, unique in France for this type of site, is evident. The reader will appreciate the wide panorama offered to him, which, by linking nature, culture, science and technology, underlines both the diversity and the continuity of the reg.…
