Unevenly trimmed, chips at top edge, upper-right corner, and left edge (none affecting image or text), 17-cm closed tear affecting top two lines of text, archivally backed and repaired. Some toning and light smudging. Good. Illustrated broadside advertising the Gran Museo Dessort during an extended engagement at Buenos Aires's Teatro San Martín. Established in Europe by Henri Dessort by the mid-nineteenth century, the itinerant anatomical and ethnological museum combined anatomical specimens and models, pathological curiosities, and representations of various ethnic "types," blurring the boundaries between scientific instruction and popular spectacle. Six wood-engraved illustrations advertise the museum's ethnological and sensational character, including stereotyped representations of a Native North American, a South Seas Islander, Patagonians, and a Chinese man, together with two grotesque, heavily hirsute figures. The broadside announces that the exhibition has been extended in response to considerable public interest, with admission limited to adults and priced at one peso. From the collection of Ricky Jay.
