Primera edición española de esta importante colección de cartas y relaciones de los padres de la Compañía de Jesús acerca de sus misiones por todo el mundo. Estas Cartas fueron reu…nidas por diferentes Padres de la Compañía y comenzaron su publicación en París en 1702, llegando a editar 34 volúmenes y alargándose su impresión hasta 1774. Esta traducción terminó mientras la colección francesa continuaba, y no pretende completarla. La tradición de estos "informes" de misioneros jesuitas se remonta a Ignacio de Loyola, fundador de la Compañía de Jesús en 1540, quien solicitaba informes frecuentes, completos y precisos de los misioneros jesuitas que partían para África, América o Asia. Veía en la comunicación epistolar no solo un instrumento de gobierno, sino también un factor de unidad. La importancia de estas Cartas es pues enorme debido al gran número de noticas de primera mano que recogen. Sabin, al hablar de Norte América, dice que sobran las palabras para comentar la importancia de una obra que narra la historia y los asentamientos en Canadá, Nueva York, Ohio, Michigan, Ilinois, Winsconsin, etc. Y lo mismo ocurre con Voltaire quien tomó de ellas todo cuanto pudo sobre Paraguay, y así con los asentamientos en California, Perú, Brasil, México, Filipinas, Japón, China, Tartaria, Persia, India, y un largo etcétera. The very scarce first Spanish edition of a collection of letters written by Jesuit missionaries in different parts of the world, including Asia (the Philippines; China; Formosa; Persia; India), the Americas (California; Canada; Mexico; Peru; Chile; Brazil; Paraguay), Africa, and the Near East (Turkey; Persia; Palestine). The letters describe many of the new geographical discoveries in these regions, and appropriately the work includes maps of the Philippine Islands, the Caroline Islands, Formosa, the Amazon, Paraguay, Mission de Los Moxos in Peru, San Domingo, India, the Nile, Mount Sinai, and the Levant, as well as plates illustrating a number of exotic animals, plants, peoples and sites. The original French edition was compiled by Charles le Gobien and others, and was published in Paris in thirty-four volumes between 1702 and 1776. "Since [this Spanish translation] . was concluded while the original French publication was still in progress, it does not, of course, have claim to completeness." (The Jesuit relations and allied documents, v. 66, p.324). There are two folding Philippines maps: the first is in greater detail and is titled Mapa de las Nuevas Philipinas descuviertas en tiempo de Phelipe V; the second shows the Philippine Islands in relation to Palau, the Marianas and the Western Carolines. In addition, there is a detailed folding map of the Carolines.
