Durante la sua giovinezza, egli era affascinato dal destino romanzesco del Re Svedese Carlo XII e nel 1717 ebbe l'occasione di incontrare a Parigi uno de suoi antichi consiglieri, il Barone di Gortz. Dieci anni pià tardi, durante il suo esilio in Inghilterra, strinse amicizia con un amico del Re, il Barone Fabrice. In questo modo potà riunire le informazioni disponibili con le confidenze di cui venne a conoscenza, ed iniziare a scrivere tra il 1728 ed il 1729 la prima versione dell'opera che venne pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1731.
