Den Besuch in Japan betrachtet der Österreicher als Höhepunkt seiner Reise. Erst wenige Jahre zuvor hatte das Land sich geöffnet und in der Folge der Meiji-Restauration dem Westen zugewandt. Vor Ort ist Doblhoff schnell ernüchtert. Er muss feststellen, dass die romantisierende Darstellung Japans auf der Weltausstellung in Wien wenig gemein hat mit der Realität im Land der aufgehenden Sonne. So ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass sich die Stimmung in seinem Reisebericht von anfänglicher Begeisterung zu kategorischer Ablehnung verfärbt.Doblhoffs Reisebericht wird in der hier vorliegenden Ausgabe durch zwölf Fotografien seines Landsmanns Raimund von Stillfried illustriert.
