Very light edgewear to head and heel (wouldn't even merit mention on a book of lesser value). Clipped dust jacket has moderate wear to edges, including some small closed tears and three pea-sized chips, and light rubbing. The silver and blue cover remains bright, DJ now protected in Mylar wraps. Uncolored proof steel engraving of Andrew Jackson. Very good condition, with water stain in bottom margin and light foxing in other margins. The image is of Jackson seated with a book open at his arm with an outdoor landscape behind him. Wide decorative border in the image including the U. S. Capitol and the Hermitage. Engraved by M. J. Danforth and printed by Burton, the title purports this to be the "Last Likeness Taken of Andrew Jackson, Painted on Ivory by John W. Dodge." While the print is clearly dated 1843, Jackson did not die until 1845. …

As such, an early manifestation of "the Seattle Spirit," the city's emblematic ethos that, until recently, had the city constantly punching above its weight. The moxie of the Chamber of Commerce to promote a ruined city with the excessive hyperbole contained in the title is quite extraordinary.Contains information on the city's founding, its resources (timber, minerals, maritime, etc.), manufacturing and financial institutions, as well as a brief section about the Great Seattle Fire.
