Brown cloth mildly soiled; shallow chip to front board's top fore-edge corner with small surface loss to cloth at upper fore-edge; light bumping/scuffing to spine ends; gilt stamping to spine and front board remains fairly bright. Foxing/toning to text block edges. Green floral decorated endpapers; past owner's ink signature on ffep verso; a few scattered spots of minor foxing and soiling but interior leaves overall remain clean. Binding is firm. Features six stories: "The Invaders;" "The Wood-Cutting Expedition;" "An Old Acquaintance;" "Lost on the Steppe; or, The Snowstorm;" "Polikushka;" "Kholstomir: A Story of a Horse." The title page imprint and Crowell's rear advertising leaf both cite the firm's address at 13 Astor Place which was their location between 1881-1893 (this according to researcher Sid Huttner's online Lucile Project which tracks the innumerable editions of Owen Meredith's classic novel). It is likely impossible to definitively ascertain Crowell's correct first printing of THE INVADERS but at least this copy is theoretically limited to 1887-1893.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Fair. No Jacket. First U.S. Edition, Later Printi. Blue cloth with gold decorative cover and spine stamp, plain end papers. This is a delicate copy. I will not exhaustively document every weak point in the binding, and every about to come out gathering. There are at least 5 weak points, a cracked front hinge, and a repaired crack in the rear hinge. The weak binding spots are towards the ends (front and back) of the text block. Whether the weak points are cracks are not is at a certain level grader's judgement, but I would say pages iii, and 766 are certainly cracked. Short tears on pages 29 and 21. Small stains (coffee?) pages 8-10. The first signature is loose and feels ready to come out. Discoloration on the front endpapers near the gutter I am assuming is discolored glue from the binding process bleeding through and showing due to years and storage conditions. The exterior has wear to the board corners, which is worse on the front cover corners. Headcap is frayed to the point of being partially gone. Tailcap is frayed and worn. Wear spot in cloth on top edge of rear panel. There is a stain on the bottom edge and several speck stains on the fore-edge. Some tanning to the text block. The primacy of various points on this edition of Anna Karenina has not been authoritatively established. This copy does not have the decorative endpapers, advertisements, and title page graphic that seem to be accepted as points for the first printing. Like other early printings on offer, this has the 1886 date on the copyright page and blue cloth and gilt stamp. An early printing of the first American edition, which is predated by the original in Russian.…

Green cloth cover with gilt lettering and a decoration at the center of the front cover. Cover has wear and soiling, edges and corners rubbed, with some fraying at top and bottom on spine. Decorative endpapers. Footnotes. Some page wear and soiling. Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (9 September 1828 - 20 November 1910), usually referred to as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer who is regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time. He received nominations for the Nobel Prize in Literature every year from 1902 to 1906 and for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1901, 1902, and 1909; the fact that he never won is a major controversy. Tolstoy's notable works include the novels War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1878), often cited as pinnacles of realist fiction. He first achieved literary acclaim in his twenties with his semi-autobiographical trilogy, Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth, and Sebastopol Sketches, based upon his experiences in the Crimean War. His fiction includes short stories, novellas, plays and numerous philosophical essays. In the 1870s, Tolstoy experienced a profound moral crisis, followed by what he regarded as an equally profound spiritual awakening, as outlined in his nonfiction work A Confession. Nathan Haskell Dole (August 31, 1852 - May 9, 1935) was an American editor, translator, and author. A writer and journalist, he translated many of the works of Leo Tolstoy and of other Russians; novels of Armando Palacio Valdés; and works from the French and Italian. From 1887 to 1901 he was literary advisor to T. Y. Crowell Publishing Company. The short stories here presented form about one-half of the twelfth volume of Count Tolstoi's collected writings. In the translation of these stories, no attempt has been made to make smooth, easy reading: the effort has been rather to reproduce the crisp, sharp staccato of the Russian. A glossary of all the words found in the text may not be found amiss. For the sake of some reader, who may like a little stronger flavor of the original, certain words and expressions are referred to in footnotes. The Death of Ivan Ilyich, first published in 1886, is a novella by Leo Tolstoy, considered one of the masterpieces of his late fiction, written shortly after his religious conversion of the late 1870s. Considered to be one of the finest examples of a novella, The Death of Ivan Ilyich tells the story of a high-court judge in 19th-century Russia and his sufferings and death from a terminal illness. Ivan Ilyich lives a carefree life that is "most simple and most ordinary and therefore most terrible". Like everyone he knows, he spends his life climbing the social ladder. Enduring marriage to a woman whom he often finds too demanding, he works his way up to be a magistrate, thanks to the influence he has over a friend who has just been promoted, focusing more on his work as his family life becomes less tolerable. While hanging curtains for his new home one day, he falls awkwardly and hurts his side. Though he does not think much of it at first, he begins to suffer from a pain in his side. As his discomfort grows, his behavior towards his family becomes more irritable. His wife finally insists that he visit a physician. The physician cannot pinpoint the source of his malady, but soon it becomes clear that his condition is terminal. Confronted with his diagnosis, Ivan attempts every remedy he can to obtain a cure for his worsening situation, until the pain grows so intense that he is forced to cease working and spend the remainder of his days in bed. Here, he is brought face to face with his mortality and realizes that, although he knows of it, he does not truly grasp it. During the long and painful process of dying, Ivan dwells on the idea that he does not deserve his suffering because he has lived rightly. If he had not lived a good life, there could be a reason for his pain; but he has, so pain and death must be arbitrary and senseless. As he begins to hate his family for avoiding the subject of his death, for pretending he is only sick and not dying, he finds his only comfort in his peasant boy servant, Gerasim, the only person in Ivan's life who does not fear death, and also the only one who, apart from his own son, shows compassion for him. Ivan begins to question whether he has, in fact, lived a good life. In the final days of his life, Ivan makes a clear split between an artificial life, such as his own, which masks the true meaning of life and makes one fear death, and an authentic life, the life of Gerasim. Authentic life is marked by compassion and sympathy, the artificial life by self-interest. Then "some force" strikes Ivan in the chest and side, and he is brought into the presence of a bright light. His hand falls onto his nearby son's head, and Ivan pities his son. He no longer hates his daughter or wife, but rather feels pity for them, and hopes his death will release them. In so doing, his terror of death leaves him, and as Tolstoy suggests, death itself disappears. Presumed First U. S. Edition, First printing.…

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Good. A nice-looking lot of eight different editions of the Sufi poet's best-loved, classic epic poem. The individual volumes are illustrated beautifully by a range of different artists and in multiple formats, but each is in hardcover format. The poet, Omar Khayyam (or Khayyami) was born, likely at Nishapur, in the Persian northeast, somewhere between about 1025 and 1050 A.D. His surname "Khayyam" means "tent-maker" in Persian, which might, like St. Paul/Saul, have denoted his father's vocation and major income-source. The lot is comprised of the following: 1) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, translated and edited by Edward FitzGerald, New York: E.P. Dutton, 1922, illustrated by Fish (the British artist Ann Harriet Fish). Preface to the First Edition included here. Possibly a variant binding but of a quite scarce and valuable edition. Sturdy, though rear joint cloth cracked, bound as a big, tall, quarto hardcover format, decorated orange, black and vanilla paper over boards, abraded and rubbed, black cloth-backed, bumping to and scuffing of spine head and foot. Decorated duotone endpapers front and rear. Fine frontis illustration, tissue protected. List of illustrations show a half-title design, then illustrations to 18 quatrains, each being tissue-guarded, and quite fine. Evocative historiated initials. 108 pp.; 2) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, with an Introduction by T. Cuyler Young, and illustrated by Eugene Karlin, 1964, a fourth printing of this edition. Near Fine condition brick-red cloth over boards, gilt illustration to front cover, lettering to spine. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, price-clipped and machine-clipped, chipping to and closed tear of top edge. Evocative black-and-white illustrations throughout. 80 [2] pp. plus a note about the illustrator and the edition; 3) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, edited and with an Introduction by Louis Untermeyer, New York: Random House, 1947. Very Good condition decorated red and black cloth over boards, gilt lettering to spine. Light scuffing to spine foot, else quite sturdy of binding and attractive of interior. Illustrated duotone endpapers front and rear, fine full-color illustration at frontis, based on a translation of the First Edition and combinations of the third, fourth, and fifth editions. 147 [4] pp.; 4) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, London: Macmillan & Co., 1895, a Very Good condition exemplar in hardcover format, vanilla cloth over boards, short octavo in format, gilt-ruled front and rear, gilt lettering to spine. Heavily toned endpapers, dissipating quickly. Loose bookplate of Holbrook Jackson laid in at front. Rough-cut fore-edges. 112 pp.; 5) Omar Khayyam's Quatrains, English-Persian, compiled by A. Mirbagheri, published in Tehran, Iran, by Ketabsaraye. Nearly brand-new in appearance, bound in brick-red cloth over boards, sharp and distinct gilt lettering to spine, with Persian Introduction by Moini Kermanshabi, with calligraphy by Mohammad Tagi Safania (bilingual in English and Persian) and illustrations by Reza Badrolsama throughout, many score of them. Bright and shiny dust jacket, illustrated, little worn, protected by a plastic coat. Gilt edges all around. Unpaginated, but roughly 60 pp. Gift-quality condition. 6) Fine condition exemplar of Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, published in London by Collins, n.d., but roughly 1950s, red leatherette over boards, gilt-stamped lettering to front cover, housed in a Very Good condition cardboard slipcase, blue and gold, and illustrated beautifully by evocative black-and-white engravings by Marjorie Anderson. 126 [1] pp. 7) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, Introduction by Clement K. Shorter, published in 1907 by William Heinemann of London, England. Pocketbook-sized gray cloth over boards, blind-stamped design and ruling to front cover, gilt lettering to spine. Black-and-white portrait of Edward FitzGerald at frontis, tissue-protected. 68 pp.; 8) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, Preface by Nathan Haskell Dole, published in 1900 by Thomas Mosher of N. …

Cover has wear and soiling, edges and corners rubbed, with some fraying at top and bottom on spine. Decorative endpapers. . A writer and journalist in Philadelphia, New York, and Boston, he translated many of the works of Leo Tolstoy and of other Russians; novels of Armando Palacio Valdés; a variety of works from the French and Italian. From 1887 to 1901 he was literary advisor to T. Y. Crowell Publishing Company. Anna Karenina is a novel by the Russian author Leo Tolstoy, first published in book form in 1878. A portrait of marriage and infidelity in imperial Russia, "Anna Karenina" explores love, life, and the depths of the human soul in a tale as illuminating as it is tragic. Widely considered to be one of the greatest works of literature ever written, Tolstoy himself called it his first true novel. It was initially released in serial installments from 1875 to 1877, all but the last part appearing in the periodical The Russian Messenger. A complex novel in eight parts, with more than a dozen major characters, Anna Karenina is spread over more than 800 pages (depending on the translation and publisher). It deals with themes of betrayal, faith, family, marriage, Imperial Russian society, desire, and rural vs. city life. The story centers on an extramarital affair between Anna and dashing cavalry officer Count Alexei Kirillovich Vronsky that scandalizes the social circles of Saint Petersburg and forces the young lovers to flee to Italy in a search for happiness, but after they return to Russia, their lives further unravel. Trains are a motif throughout the novel, with several major plot points taking place either on passenger trains or at stations in Saint Petersburg or elsewhere in Russia. The story takes place against the backdrop of the liberal reforms initiated by Emperor Alexander II of Russia and the rapid societal transformations that followed. The novel has been adapted into various media including theatre, opera, film, television, ballet, figure skating, and radio drama. One of the greatest novels ever written, "Anna Karenina" follows the self-destructive path of a beautiful, popular, and sensual Russian aristocrat. The lovely Anna seems set in a respectable marriage with the powerful statesman Karenin, yet their lack of passion breeds the discontent she fully faces upon meeting the elegant and affluent officer Count Vronsky. Soon convinced that allowing herself to deeply love this man will enable her to find the meaning and truth of her life, Anna defies the conventions of Russian society and leaves her husband and children for her lover. Tolstoy juxtaposes this ill-fated couple with the melancholy Levin and his new wife Kitty. Levin is also searching for the fulfillment and happiness in his life, and he ultimately finds a happiness that Anna's love do.…
