The London region is defined basically as the Greater London Council area. Works that deal with the Outer Metropolitan Area are also included if their subject matter relates to the metropolis, for example studies of commuter flows or the expansion of an outer metropolitan town in relation to London. Nine sections deal with (1) general bibliographies, statistical sources and atlases; (2) general works; (3) the physical environment; (4) historical patterns of growth and development; (5) economic structure and patterns; (6) transport; (7) social patterns and processes; (8) planning the metropolis and beyond; (9) environmental problems : conservation, pollution and control. An introduction to each section gives a brief account of its scope, the development of the subject, and the nature of its literature. The entries are arranged chronologically within each section, and each entry bears a descriptive annotation. An appendix lists libraries in London with substantial holdings on the London region.
