Quarto, paperbound (full-color illus. blue wrappers), 320 pp. Very Good, with light edgewear. From Preface: When I became Den of the College of Liberal Arts four years ago, it was the dream of many of us to establish a journal that would showcase the best of students' creative efforts -- not another literary journal per se, but a publication that would reproduce some of our lively original art and new music, award-winning history and geography essays, and knotty philosophical dialogues. We desired a special way of re-thinking critical issues confronted by our students and colleagues from sociology and criminal justice, as well as a method of re-examining the timely messages the distinguished guests from political science delivered or our theatre artists presented on stage. And so New Plains Review was launched, a journal backed by an administration as enthusiastic as we, and requiring the collective talents and genius of all liberal arts faculty and students to meet the deadlines. The product and the creativity have sometimes leapt beyond our wildest dreams: to bilingual poetry, the rediscovery of mesmerizing lost manuscripts, the excited involvement not only of our college but oftentimes the business, math and science, and education schools as well, and always the ever resourceful library, where the lamp of learning never goes out. Through New Plains Review our past and present appear clearly in concert. Each issue helps us see what our university has been and what it can be: how deep our roots are, how steadfast we have been. Our tribal village is vital and alive everywhere we turn. Now, with Deep Fork Anthology -- our most far reaching centennial project from the College of Liberal Arts -- we move away from having only our students participate to embrace faculty and alumni, national figures who recall their heritage, and other writers from across the land who know something special about our state and wish to share it on this special birthday, a birthday that our burgeoning university also celebrates.
