Paperback. Zustand: new. Paperback. Wil Rogan argues that, contrary to twentieth-century interpretation, the Fourth Gospel did not replace purity with faith in Jesus. Instead, as with other early Jewish writings, its discourse about purity functions as a way to make sense of life before God in the world. He suggests that Johns Gospel employs biblical and early Jewish traditions of purity associated with divine revelation and Israels restoration to narrate how Gods people are prepared for the coming of Jesus and enabled by him to have life with God characterized by love. After evaluating different theories of purity for the interpretation of the Fourth Gospel, Rogan explores John the Baptist as an agent of ritual purification, Jesus as the agent of moral purification, and the disciples of Jesus as ones who are (or are not) made morally pure by Jesus. While purity is not one of the Fourth Gospels primary focuses, Rogan stresses that the concept figures into some of its most significant claims about Christology, the doctrine of salvation, and ethics. Through purity, the Fourth Gospel guards continuity with the past while placing surprising conditions on participation in Israels future. Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. MULTI-SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY, WITH SIGNATURES THROUGHOUT THE VOLUME ASSOCIATED WITH WOMEN PROFILED IN THE BOOK. First edition of this substantial and increasingly interesting work of South Carolina women's and local history, sponsored by the Laurens County Historical Society and published by The R. L. Bryan Company of Columbia in 1972. The volume presents biographical accounts of thirty distinguished women associated with Laurens County, South Carolina, documenting their contributions to medicine, education, literature, public service, social welfare, preservation, religion, and civic life. This particular copy is especially notable for the presence of multiple signatures throughout the book, associated directly with the women profiled within, making it an unusual association copy rather than merely an ordinarily signed copy. Among the particularly noteworthy examples is Dr. Anne Austin Young, whose signature, "Dr Anne Austin Young," appears immediately beneath her photographic portrait on page 158 at the beginning of her biographical section. The accompanying printed caption identifies Dr. Young as the first woman from Laurens County to receive a medical degree. Her biography recounts her pioneering medical career, including her work in obstetrics and gynecology and her later practice in Anderson, South Carolina, where the text states that she delivered more than 9,000 babies. The placement of signatures in association with the individual subjects' portraits and biographical sections gives this copy particular interest as an artifact of the women, families, and historical community represented by the publication. Historical figures represented in the volume include Ann Pamela Cunningham, preservationist associated with the preservation of George Washington's Mount Vernon; Pulitzer Prize-winning South Carolina author Julia Mood Peterkin; Sarah Ward; Mary Musgrove; Dicey Langston; Mary Dillard; Wil Lou Gray; Irene Dillard Elliott; Marguerite Tolbert; Dr. Christine South Gee; Dr. Kate V. Wofford; Harriet Gray Blackwell; and numerous other women important to the history of Laurens County and South Carolina. Illustrated throughout with photographic portraits and other historical images. An especially desirable copy for collectors and researchers of South Carolina history, Laurens County history, women's history, women in medicine, women's education, genealogy, Southern history, and signed/association books. Condition Book: Very Good. Dust Jacket: Good. Original reddish/rust cloth hardcover with black lettering to front board and spine. Binding remains sound and attractive with light age and handling wear. Interior generally clean and well preserved, with the aforementioned signatures associated with subjects represented in the volume. Original dust jacket present, retaining the original $5.95 price. Jacket shows age-related wear including rubbing, soiling/spotting, discoloration, edge wear, and several small tears/chips, particularly along the upper edges and spine area. Please examine photographs carefully for condition. The rear jacket panel provides a complete listing of the thirty distinguished women included in the volume. Of particular importance, the signatures present throughout this copy are a feature of the copy and should not be confused with ordinary reader marginalia. They occur in association with women represented in the book, including the signature of Dr. Anne Austin Young beneath her own portrait. All photographs are of the actual book offered for sale and form part of the condition description. An unusual multi-signed association copy of a significant 1972 South Carolina women's-history publication. The combination of original dust jacket, first-edition status, regional historical content, photographic biographies, and signatures associated with women represented within makes this a substantially more interesting copy than the ordinary unsigned edition.…
