Dans ce concert Guillaume-Thomas Raynal (1713-1796), qui donne en 1770 la première édition de son Histoire philosophique et politique des établissements et du commerce des Européens dans les deux Indes, eut un rôle décisif. Son oeuvre est à la fois encyclopédique et critique, et l'une des premières à appréhender le phénomène de la mondialisation. L'entreprise de Raynal et de ses collaborateurs relève d'un effort de démocratisation du savoir, et nourrit une réflexion qui élabore comme autant d'impératifs les concepts de liberté individuelle, d'abolition de l'esclavage, de libre circulation des marchandises et des idées, d'égalité entre les hommes ou d'autodétermination politique. Cet ouvrage réunit, autour de la présentation de documents exceptionnels (archives, manuscrits, récits de voyages, journaux, oeuvres polémiques, documents iconographiques, du XVIe au début du XIXe siècle), les contributions d'une quinzaine de spécialistes. Il s'attache à cerner la singularité du regard des Lumières sur l'Amérique, regard plongé dans l'actualité du moment la guerre d'Indépendance mais aussi annonciateur des profondes transformations politiques et sociales de la Révolution française.
