Hardcover. Zustand: new. Hardcover. The American Vine-Dresser's Guide, by Jean Jacques (John James) Dufour is a treatise on growing grapes in America, specifically the eastern half of the country. This early work, first published in 1826, is an amazingly thorough text on grape growing and wine making. Dufour's keen sense of obse…rvation gave him an understanding of grape growing comparable to many "experts" of today, without the benefit of the modern sciences of biology, plant physiology, plant pathology, soil fertility, and so on. Despite the fact that the book was written nearly 200 years ago, many of the practices recommended are still applicable in the modern vineyard; and Dufour's detailed recommendations on vineyard management show the reader that very little has changed in grape growing technology over the past two centuries. Many topics are covered in detail that would be appropriate for today's growers along with text notes and 16 pages of color photos. A treatise on growing grapes in America, specifically the eastern half of the country. This early work, first published in 1826, is a thorough text on grape growing and wine making. Dufour's keen sense of observation gave him an understanding of the process comparable to many ""experts"" of today. Couverture rigide. Zustand: Très bon. Poids: 490gr. Authored by wine connoisseur John James DeFour, who established the first commercial vineyard in the United States, The American Vine-Dressers Guide is an amazingly thorough work on grape growing and wine making specifically adapted to the American climate and soil. Despite bei…ng published nearly 200 years ago in 1826, DeFours practices and recommendations are still being utilized and referenced today since little has changed in the wine-making industry. DeFours knowledge and understanding of the process were very far advanced compared with the technology available in his day. With extensive tips and information about grape selections, watering grapes, manure, soil fertility, barreling wine, and much more, The American Vine-Dressers Guide is truly a wine-making tome with as much relevance today as in the early 19th century. Of the importance of wine and grapes, DeFour states in the preface, . . . show the consequence on the health, temperance and cheerfulness of the people generally in any country, where there is a sufficient supply of genuine wine, which is equal to the provision of bread stuff. ".

An exceptionally scarce first edition of "the first truly American book on grape growing and wine making" by the owner of the first commercial winery in the United States. John James Dufour emigrated to the United States from the Swiss winemaking canton of Vaud in 1796, with a mission to find land for a colony of settlers to grow grapes and make wine. He toured the United States, examining all of the known vineyards at the time, but was disappointed by what he found in the mid-Atlantic states, including the vineyards at Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. Dufour traveled west, over the Appalachian Mountains, to explore vineyards on the frontier, where he found the prospects more promising. He eventually settled at Big Bend, on the Kentucky River, in 1798, where he founded the aptly-named "First Vineyard" colony, planting vines he believed to be of European stock. The results were mixed, which inspired him to embark upon a period of serious experimentation, and necessitated another move farther west. Dufour and the other settlers purchased a second piece of land in Indiana on the banks of the Ohio River and named it New Switzerland. This second settlement was more successful, and resulted in the production of America's first commercial wines. Throughout his life, Dufour had made efforts to share his knowledge of grape growing and wine making, and in that spirit in the year before his death he published The Vine Dresser's Guide. The book is an astonishing work of both observation and experimentation, deriving from his thorough tours of American vineyards, giving him unprecedented experience and perspective, and enabling him to write a guide-book that was the first to be free of the derivative practices that were prescribed in earlier works. Gabler calls Dufour's account of these observations, "The most accurate account of grape growing in the United States at the beginning of the 19th century." Dufour also realized that America could do better, that grape varieties could be improved through selective plant breeding, and advocated a series of growing protocols which are still widely in use today. To this day, the town of Vevay, which sits on the banks of the Ohio River in Switzerland Country, Indiana, celebrates Dufour's legacy with its annual Swiss Wine Festival. Based on the evidence of Dufour's will and the surviving records of his estate, it is estimated that the book was printed in an edition of five hundred copies, with scant records at auction or in commerce. John James Dufour, originally from Switzerland, sought to bring the grapevines of the "Old World" to America. Many of these grape varieties failed to grow, presumably due to the different soils and climates throughout the States. Dufour toured nearly all existing American vineyards of the time and published his observations in this volume. It is recognized as "the most accurate account of grape growing in the United States at the beginning of the 19th century" (Gabler 82). First edition of The American Vine-Dresser's Guide by John James Dufour, one of the first American works dedicated to viticulture. (illustrator).
