From the dustjacket: Sir Richard Southern was a fellow and tutor of Balliol College, Oxford, from 1937 to 1961, Chichele Professor of Modern History from 1961 to 1969, and since 1969 has been President of St. John's College, Oxford. In this book will be found seventeen essays by his old pupils on various aspects of a subject which he made particularly his own, The Writing of History in the Middle Ages. Ranging from the eighth century to the fifteenth, and from Scotland to Byzantium, the essays illustrate both the unity and the breadth of Sir Richard's teaching. Norman and Anglo-Norman historians (from Worcester to Bec-Hellouin, and Bec-Hellouin to Salerno) receive special attention, but there are also studies of confession and sermons as historical sources; of legal history and chivalrous history; of German town chroniclers; and of the biographer of King Henry VI. Large octavo, xxxiv, 299 pages with numerous illustrations (by James Wieneke, some in monochrome) plus 208 plates (mainly from photographs, 19 in colour) and a double-page map. Pictorial brown cloth, top edge dyed to match; covers slightly bumped at the extremities; some offsetting to a few early leaves; unobtrusive light tidemark to the bottom margin of most of the leaves of text; overall, a very good copy with the very good dustwrapper (a little rubbed and lightly worn at the extremities). This revised edition also includes the greater part of 'Our Sandhill Country' (first published in 1933). A 'wide and general account of life on the cattle runs of the Channel Country', its natural history and the Aboriginal inhabitants. Provenance: Dick Kimber (Richard Glyn Kimber AM, 1939-2024, Centralian author and historian), with his occasional annotations. The most significant of them is a 116-word 'review' of the book written in ballpoint pen on the dedication page. He compares the content of this expanded edition with the 1952 edition, and comes to the following conclusion: 'Are the additional Addendums and chapters reliable? Much is obviously rather "romantic", some appears to be plagiarised (additional notes for additional photographs plus, perhaps, more). Very difficult book to assess'.…
