Printed in a limitation of only 500 copies, it combines Ralph Cheever Dunning's refined verse with Howard Simon's elegant woodcut illustrations in a volume that reflects Titus's commitment to craftsmanship as much as literature. Issued from Titus's Rue Delambre press, only steps from Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare and Company, the book represents the beginning of a publishing enterprise that would soon become associated with D. H. Lawrence, Anaïs Nin, Henry Miller, and other important voices of twentieth-century literature. For collectors of fine printing, Rococo is the foundation upon which the reputation of the Black Manikin Press was built. A PARIS LITERARY CROSSROADS. Edward W. Titus occupied a unique position within the expatriate literary community of 1920s Paris. Bookseller, publisher, critic, and patron, he fostered relationships with writers and artists working beyond the limits of conventional commercial publishing. The establishment of the Black Manikin Press allowed Titus to unite careful hand-press craftsmanship with contemporary literary experimentation, producing books that were both typographically distinguished and culturally significant. THE FIRST IMPRESSION. Rather than beginning with controversial novels or established literary figures, Titus chose this modest collection of poetry to introduce his new press. The decision reflects his confidence that exceptional typography, thoughtful design, and fine illustration could establish the reputation of a publisher before notoriety or commercial success followed. The collaboration between Dunning and illustrator Howard Simon produced a remarkably harmonious debut that announced the artistic ambitions of the Black Manikin Press. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Original quarter white parchment spine lettered in gilt over blue-grey paper-covered boards with blue paper title label mounted to the upper cover. Measuring approximately 9 by 5.25 inches. Unpaginated (22 pages). Printed in a limitation of 500 numbered copies, this being copy number 473. Illustrated throughout with three tipped-in woodcut plates by Howard Simon, the first bearing the artist's signature in the block. CONDITION: Near Fine. The bindings are tight and square, holding firmly. Internally clean and unmarked with light, even age-toning. Most leaves remain unopened beyond the preliminary gatherings. The parchment spine displays gentle, even toning with faint hand-soiling typical of the material, light rubbing at the extremities, and minor offsetting to the endpapers. An exceptionally well-preserved example of a notoriously delicate production. BIBLIOGRAPHIC SIGNIFICANCE: THE BIRTH OF BLACK MANIKIN PRESS. Rococo occupies a pivotal place in twentieth-century private press history as the first publication issued under the Sign of the Black Manikin. It established the visual and typographic principles that Edward W. Titus would continue to refine throughout the following decade, laying the foundation for one of the most respected expatriate presses operating in Paris. PRINTING MODERNISM. Although remembered today for publishing D. H. Lawrence, Anaïs Nin, and Henry Miller, Titus first demonstrated his ambitions through finely printed limited editions such as Rococo. After Rococo (a single poem), Windfalls was the release of years of poetry under a deathly susurrus. First edition, no. 106 of 500 copies (the first 25 on Japon). With a frontispiece portrait of the author by Polia Chentoff, printed by Martin Kaelin. Letter Press by Imprimerie Crété, "both of Montparnasse." Beautifully clean throughout, with ten small pencil scores highlighting poems on the contents page, and slight printer's shadow to the poem of p.11, Drowned. One section (from frontis to p.12) loosened off spine without damage. Front gutter cracked, the binding remaining sound. Boards lightly rubbed. Paper label on spine complete if a little rubbed. Again, I find no bibliographical records, and very little scholarship.

A Detroit native, Dunning (1878-1930) moved to Paris in 1905 where he dedicated his time to only a small group of poems, composed in the style of the late Victorian era, publishing his…first collection of poems Hyllus: A Drama in 1910 (London: John Lane, The Bodley Head). Around 1924 Ezra Pound 'discovered' Dunning, a recluse and an addict, and ensured his publishing in the journals of the day; I have read even that EP supplied Dunning with drugs, which, considering Pound's mansarde et potage, one might believe. After Dunning received the Helen Haire Nevinson Prize from Poetry, A Magazine of Verse in 1925 the literati of the Left Bank began to heatedly debate Dunning's poetry. The push for vers libre, as had been happening for 20 years, had left the public finally numb to any vers à la Victorien; Dunning's advance of a style yet older struggled to be received, though it reads with a precision worthy of the Ancient Mariner. This book was the inaugural volume of The Black Manikin Press, one of the key expatriate presses of Paris in the 1920's later to print Anaïs Nin, D. H. Lawrence, Djuna Barnes, Henry Miller and more. No. 80 of 500 copies all printed on Holland, the first fifty not for sale, with three illustrations by Howard Simon. Signed by Dunning on the limitation page and by Simon under the frontispiece. Spine mottled with a small break at top (nothing lost); light fading to the edge of the boards; endpapers browned spilling over to adjacent blanks where cut short; stock otherwise fine throughout. No bibliography has been composed for Dunning. Signed by Author(s).

In good condition (spine and boards worn). Published sixteen years after his pastoral drama «Hyllus» when Dunning was already forty-eight, the Victorian-style poem in «terza rima» «Rococo» is his second work and the first book printed by Edward Titus's Black Manikin Press. Dunning, who was born in Detroit and lived in Paris for most of his adult life, was close friends with Pound, who admired his work and insisted on helping him with his opium addiction, frequently asking friends to check in on him (Hemingway reportedly found him in a trance brought on by drugs on the roof of his flat one day).
