Rubbed to the boards and the spine with a couple of tears in the cloth to the rear joint, and one large tear in the cloth to the front joint. Bumped to the tail of the spine with a couple of closed tears, whereas the cloth flaps to the head of the spine. Front and rear hinge starting. Internally, generally firmly bound. The front endpaper and frontispiece are disbound but present, and the gutter is visible between pages 112 and 113, 128 and 129, and 144 to 145. Heavily foxed to the frontispiece and half title, but pages are generally bright and clean otherwise, with some moderate foxing to the plates and their surrounding pages. Good. The first edition of this well regarded work. Two volumes bound together in half morocco with marbled paper covered boards and marbled end papers. Both title pages present. Beautifully illustrated with ninety-six engraved views of the Alps and thirteen maps, one folded to the rear, with the key routes hand coloured. Collated, complete. The engravings are by Robert Brandard, C. Westwood, E. Finden and others, all after original drawings by Brockedon. Each plate features a discreet, publisher's blind-stamp of the artist's initial to the edge of the plate, as called for. Nineteenth-century English artist, inventor and writer, William Brockedon, is primarily remembered for this impressive work. Following a trip to the Alps in 1824, the idea of publishing an illustrated guide to the great passes came to Brockedon. It was issued gradually in twelve parts on royal quarto paper and designed to be bound in two volumes. Here, two volumes bound in one. In 1833, he published a subsequent work, Journals of Excursions in the Alps, the Pennine, Graian, Cottian, Rhetian, Lepontine, and Bernese. Bookplate of Sir William Kay to the front pastedown with the library label of Bath Public Library to the front free end paper and library blind stamps throughout to the title pages and all plates.
