Following the discovery of gold on tribal lands, white prospectors flooded the region. Pressured by the U.S., some Nez Perce leaders signed a new treaty on June 9, 1863. The treaty drastically reduced the reservation's size by 90% to just 750,000 acres. Many "non-treaty" bands, including those led by Chief Joseph, refused to sign, arguing that the leaders who signed had no authority to cede their homelands.
