Instead of glorifying traditional heroes like La Salle and Montcalm, he shifts the spotlight to the merchants who paved the way for the expansion of the frontier. He also casts the Indians in a new light, revealing that they were far more than mere pawns in the struggle between France and England. Indian diplomacy, he shows, was consistently better conceived and better executed than that of the European powers.
