The Nib was the acclaimed American comics magazine founded and edited by cartoonist Matt Bors (two-time Pulitzer Prize Finalist for editorial cartooning). Dedicated to political satire, graphic journalism, memoir, and nonfiction comics, it published both online and in a series of themed print issues. Issue #5, the Animals Issue, was released in January 2020 as a 112-page full-color anthology. listo of Lisa Hanawalt, best known for her distinctive anthropomorphic illustrations and work on BoJack Horseman, provided the striking cover art: a central kangaroo-like figure in a bright pink jacket standing between a rabbit in overalls and a pink bird-like creature, accompanied by the magazine's signature fountain-pen logo and "ANIMALS" title treatment. Inside, more than two dozen cartoonists from around the world explore humanity's complex relationships with animals through a mix of comics journalism, personal memoir, satire, and illustrated reportage. Highlights include: Former Guantánamo Bay detainee Mansoor Adayfi recounting the animals he encountered while imprisoned, illustrated by Kane Lynch ("Caged Lives"). Arwen Donahue's memoir of raising goats and the emotional and practical realities of farming for meat and milk. Laura Athayde on Amazonian pink-dolphin myths and their cultural implications. Mike Centeno examining machismo and bullfighting in Venezuela. Dorian Alexander, Sarah Mirk, and Levi Hastings on the illegal trade in tropical birds. Dispatches and shorter pieces by Julia Bernhard, Andy Warner, Sarah Glidden, Tom Humberstone, Elizabeth Haidle, Sage Coffey, Mey Rude, Lilian Min, Diane Zhou, and others. Strips and features by Ruben Bolling, Gemma Correll, Ben Passmore, Lauren Weinstein, Lucy Knisley, Michael Kupperman, Chelsea Saunders, Brian McFadden, Joey Alison Sayers, Matt Furie, Kory Bing (on "endlings"), and more. The issue also includes illustrated animal statistics, reader responses, and the magazine's characteristic blend of sharp reporting and visual inventiveness. The original retail price was $14.95. This is a scarce original print issue from a publication that ceased operations in 2023. Copies in As New condition are uncommon on the secondary market. Ideal for collectors of independent comics, graphic journalism, Lisa Hanawalt, Matt Bors, or contemporary nonfiction comics. listo of cartoonists and illustrators: Lisa Hanawalt, Kane Lynch, Arwen Donahue, Laura Athayde, Mike Centeno, Dorian Alexander, Levi Hastings, Sarah Mirk, Julia Bernhard, Andy Warner, Sarah Glidden, Tom Humberstone, Elizabeth Haidle, Sage Coffey, Mey Rude, Lilian Min, Diane Zhou, Krystel Bugayong, Kory Bing, Ruben Bolling, Gemma Correll, Ben Passmore, Lauren Weinstein, Lucy Knisley, Michael Kupperman, Chelsea Saunders, Brian McFadden, Joey Alison Sayers, Matt Furie, Matt Lubchansky, Meg O'Shea, Mady G, Molly Brooks, Delta Vasquez, Gerardo Alba, Matt Bors.
