In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Very Good+ binding. Very Good dust jacket. First Edition. Octavo. 148, [3 (adverts)] pp. First edition. Signed and inscribed by Howard Baker on the front free endpaper. In publisher's cloth with dust jacket. Spine is a trifle sunned; offsetting to the endpaper; dust jacket is darkened at the spine with relatively minor edgewear. A remarkably copy that belonged to Baker in which he has reworked entire stanza's of his poetry in ink, as well as other marginal changes. Eventually inscribed and presented to Bud and Mildred [surely, Bronson] important members of the northern California literary/academic scene. Unrelated, there is laid in is a small and charming undated note to Baker's father and brother at Christmastime. Additionally, laid in are several pages of copied typescripts comprising three poems: "The Passing Generation," "If Accident Should Strike Me Down," and "Ode on the Sea." The first with ink corrections in Baker's hand. A nice archive of material from the Stanford educated poet. Signed.…

In den WarenkorbSoftcover. Zustand: Fair. Issue of November 1929, the third of four published. Slim quarto. Stapled wrappers, pages mimeographed rectos only. Wrappers separated and tattered, foredge loss to about half the text, affecting a few words of the title page and first two poems by Grant H. Code, but marginal and growing ever-smaller after that, a fair copy of a notoriously fragile literary magazine with the mimeographed pages supple. This issue prints poems by Grant H. Code; Nuño Fernandez Torneal's "The Lady's Farewell," translated from the old Galician by Yvor Winters; "Summer Dust: Four Episodes," a prose piece by Caroline Gordon; "Hymns by Firelight" by Janet Lewis; "Notes on Contemporary Criticism" and "The Empty Hills" by Yvor Winters; "Mute Interlude" by David Cornel DeJong; and the short story "Theft" by Katherine Anne Porter. The third issue of this short-lived but influential California literary quarterly edited by Winters along with Janet Lewis, and Howard Baker, who were the principle contributors for his classes at Stanford in 1929 and early 1930. *The Gyroscope* is considered one of the earliest, if not the earliest, mimeographed literary magazines. An extremely fragile format with a limited print run that never grew beyond 180 subscribers, many of those the top literary figures of the day. The grandfather of the mimeograph revolution.…
