4to (252 x 174 mm). Pages 65-100 (= 36 pp.). Offprint from the Annals of Mathematics, vol. 39, no. 1. Original printed wrappers, signed "A. Einstein" on upper cover. A signed offprint of Einstein's influential paper on the formulation of gravitational field equations and the motion of bodies. Einstein, with Leopold Infeld and Banesh Hoffmann, here addresses one of the defining technical problems of general relativity and seeks to show how the field equations themselves suffice to determine motion without recourse to separate laws. - The paper marks a critical stage in the maturation of relativistic gravitational theory and stands at the origin of what are now known as the Einstein-Infeld-Hoffmann equations, a seminal result in the approximation of the dynamics of gravitating bodies. Produced in the final decade of Einstein's career, the work belongs to the sustained attempt to reconcile geometry and dynamics within curved spacetime, and to refine the physical consequences of general relativity at a moment when modern mathematical physics was rapidly consolidating its classical foundations. - Well preserved. - From the collection of the Atlanta gynecologist Goodman Basil Espy III (1935-2024). - Boni 236. Weil 202 ("principal work"). …

Part Three: Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Medicine . ]. Boni 69-70. Schilpp 76-77. This volume is dedicated to topics within physics: light, mechanics, motion, electricity, and other areas of research are illuminated by papers from several of the twentieth century's pre-eminent physicists (including Einstein, Planck, Lorentz, among others). This book contains Einstein's "Theoretische Atomistik", and "Die Relativitätstheorie", published here for the first time in book form ( "Die Relativitätstheorie" first appeared as a journal article). A lovely example. A touch of fading to the boards' top edges, overall an exceptional copy.…

First Edition, Offprint Issue from Volume 13, number 6. Single sheet, approximately 10" x 8" pp 41-42 pp. A very fine example of this rare issue, a very minor and unobtrusive stain to an upper corner. SCARCE OFFPRINT ISSUE OF AN IMPORTANT EINSTEIN PAPER OF STATISTICAL MECHANICS and a continuation of his remarkable 1905 and 1906 publications on Brownian Motion, which not only led to the proof of the existence of the atom but also worked to determine the size of atoms, and how many atoms there are in a mole, or the molecular weight in grams, of a gas. This paper also contains a note on the technical meaning of "average velocity.".…

An important offprint, first edition. With mathematical formulas in text. Small folio, in the original orange off-print paper wrappers printed in black on both covers. 8 pp. Very fine, nearly as new. A RARE AND IMPORTANT OFFPRINT. EINHEITLICHEN FELDTHEORIE, which means "A Coherent Theory of the Electro-Magnetic Field" and is the title of a five-page paper of highest mathematical formulae which Relativist Albert Einstein worked on for ten years. His report is a purely mathematical extension of the general theory of relativity to include gravitational and electromagnetic phenomena. His relativity theory, which he phrased within only three printed pages, made time & space the creator of matter. When this paper on the Unified Field Theory was published, it was a headline story in the newspapers. Few, if any people, understood the complex mathematics, but many were fascinated by the thought that Einstein had possibly came up with a new theory, expanding on "General Relativity", and unifying the fundamental forces of nature. It is considered Einstein's last important scientific work (Weil #165). "In 1928, [Einstein] embarked on a new approach to a unified field theory. involving what he called 'distant parallelism'. By early 1929 he had solved the main problems involved in writing down field equations for his unified field theory. On the day of official publication of the third of a formidably technical series of nine articles on the theory. excited headlines appeared in foreign newspapers throughout the world. In this frenzied, unscientific atmosphere, Einstein's new theory was hailed in the press as an outstanding scientific advance. Yet Einstein had stated in his article that this was still tentative; and soon he found he had to abandon it" (Hoffmann/Dukas, ''Albert Einstein: Creator and Rebel'' (1972) pp. 225-226).…

8°. 64 S. Typogr. Orig.-Kartonumschlag. Boni 78.1. Horblit 26. PMM 408. Schilpp-Schields 86. Weil 80 a. - Erste separate Ausgabe (Sonderdruck aus den Annalen der Physik, Band 49, 1916). "Druck von Metzger & Wittig in Leipzig. 314". - "It is described now as the original of this classic paper" (Weil). - "The theory of relativity has transformed astrophysics, and indeed the whole scientific outlook." (Carter/Muir). - "This paper was the first comprehensive overview of the final version of Einstein's general theory of relativity after several expositions of preliminary versions and latest revisions of the theory in November 1915. It includes a self-contained exposition of the elements of the tensor calculus that are needed for the theory" (T. Sauer in Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics). April 2007", sehr gutes Exemplar. - First separate edition (offprint from Annalen der Physik, vol. 49, 1916). "Printed by Metzger & Wittig in Leipzig. 314". - With the introduction (p. 5/6), which is not included in the journal print, and independent pagination. - "If a spaceship were to travel to Arcturus, a hundred light years away from us, at almost the speed of light, the crew would think the journey would take ten years because time would slow down for them. If the ship returns after another hundred years, it would again seem to the crew that it would only take ten years. The closer a space traveler gets to the speed of light, the more 'immortal' they become. And this effect is even verifiable. The extended life expectancy has been proven by physicists for certain elementary part.…

FIRST EDITION. Original printed orange wrappers; a fine copy, unopened, and bound into morocco-backed cloth boards, spine labeled in gilt. First edition, first issue, in the rare author's offprint form with a newly set title-page. One of Einstein's last important scientific works, this publication of the unified field theory caused quite a sensation. It was the first separate printing of one of a series of five papers published between 1925 and 1929 in which Einstein attempted to develop a unified field theory, reconciling in a single formula the laws of electromagnetism and gravitation. Weil, 165; Printing & the Mind of Man, 418.…
