Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - There once was a girl who felt a bit lost. She had no idea in which direction she wanted to go; just that she did not fancy the direction most other people seemed to be going. She felt that something momentous had to happen before she would start to feel alive, but nothing momentous ever happened in the Northamptonshire (UK) countryside. Thankfully for her, there were still 20 years to go before the British public lost its collective mind: departure from the European Union still nothing more than an improbable fantasy in Nigel's head. So when the girl was 18, she decided to go to Spain, where a summer trip 'just to learn the language' was able to turn into an 8-year odyssey of discovery - as opposed to being called to a halt after 90 days as it would be in today's sunlit Brexity uplands. Hopefully funny in places, hopefully thought-provoking in others, and with more factual information on a wide variety of topics thrown in to keep readers on their toes, this is ultimately the story of a girl unable to tether herself to a conventional life. Originally written in 2008, revised and published in 2013 and re-revised and re-published in 2026 (the very last time, I promise - I have been putting off getting on with the next book for long enough), I dedicate An English Fandango - Tales of a Modern-Day Nomad to all the British youngsters who have been deprived of the right to wander their own continent by the self-defeating idiocy of Brexit. You are our hope for the future - good luck. Chanaryn, Simone (illustrator). …

Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. Near Fine dj. First Edition Thus. [sharp-looking copy, with no wear at all to book, and no internal markings; the jacket has the teensiest bit of surface wear (although you'll never notice it in its new mylar jacket cover)]. A new "augmented edition" of the author's only short-story collection, with tales ranging "from the idyllic to the macabre" -- mostly the latter, including the title story and the acknowledged classic "Whittington's Cat," about a young man tormented by a giant demonic feline. (The "augmentation" consists of a long Introduction about the author, by Christopher Roden, and the addition of two stories, "The Little Mermaid" and "No Ships Pass," that had not appeared in previous editions.) Although she lived only to the age of 43, Lady Smith racked up a lot of experience. Before she began turning out short fiction and the occasional novel in the early 1930s, she had already been a society reporter, a film critic and a circus publicist; she drew on all these careers to evoke, in her fiction, "the enchantment of the circus, the glamour of gypsydom, [and] the very spirit of the theatre." A number of her novels were adapted into British films in the 1930s and 1940s, and somehow she also found time to write a memoir of her travels, "Life's a Circus," published in 1939. The printing of this edition was limited to 500 copies. Illustrated by (dj painting) Paul Lowe (illustrator).…
