Illustrated with a frontispiece and eight further charming engraved plates.Aiming to provide moral guidance and examples of good behaviour, this volume consists of eighteen short tales aimed at guiding the young in their development, with titles including 'Prudence without Meanness', 'Good - Not Best', and 'Penny Wise and Pound Foolish'.Undated; dated c1840 via Jisc and WorldCat. In a half morocco binding, with gilt detailing to back strip, and marbled paper covered boards. A touch of rubbing to back strip head and tail, otherwise externally lovely. Front hinge lightly strained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages significantly age toned, with the odd spot. Very Good. book.

A translation into French of Elliott's Dumb Animals, this appears to be a variant to Darton, H396 which calls for a folding engraved frontispiece. Darton, 58, Holborn Hill, 1810, original printed paper covers, stitched, 12 x 10 cm., 30 pages, frontispiece and 5 plates (4 of which are hand-coloured. The frontispiece is included in the pagination, the plates are unpaginated), the lower 1.5 cm. of the spine is torn exposing the gatherings, slightly torn at the head of the spine, slight split along the inner edge of the front cover but holding well (see photograph), lower corner of the front cover a little creased, covers worn and a little soiled, off-setting opposite the plates, otherwise a sound and internally very clean copy. NOTE: There was an earlier edition in 1909. Size: 12 x 10 cm.

Original Wrappers. Squat 12mo, paginated to include covers. Wood engraved frontispiece and five full-page plates. Some offsetting from plates, leaves a little browned and soiled. Paper wraps are worn and rubbed. This early juvenile was first published in 1809, this is the second edition. The wood engraved covers (both upper and lower) are probably by the publisher William Darton II. This is a scarce copy of Mary Belson (Elliott)'s first work. Both William Darton senior and junior were pioneers in children's book publishing in England. Rare, COPAC locates just three copies of this edition at the BL, Cambridge and the V & A. Alderson & Oyens: Be Merry and Wise, Origins of Children's Book Publishing in England, 1650-1850, 193a.

Mary (Belson) Elliott (1794?-1870) was DartonÕs steadiest and most prolific author during the publisherÕs time at Holburn Hill, though very little is known about her life otherwise; her early works were published anonymously. The preface to her Innocent Poetry (1809) states that she and her sister ÒElizaÓ had an elderly, infirm mother who they had to care for. It is possible that ÒElizaÓ was Elizabeth Belson, one of whose works was published by William Darton eight years later. The date of her marriage has been placed at 1819, but her husbandÕs identity has not been successfully established. It was initially thought that her spouse was London printer Edward Elliott; however, this has proven to be untrue when tested against the Census returns. Several of ElliotÕs works were reprinted in America and Darton eventually published French translations of some of her work, though she seems to have worked with no other English publisher than Darton and his associates. Precept and Example is a simple tale about three children during the summer holidays with a particular emphasis on their faults and the manner in which they overcome them.
