November 1844 in Frankfurt a. M. geboren, studierte in Tübingen, Freiburg und in Heidelberg, wo er 1867 promovierte. Nach kurzer chirurgischer Tätigkeit unter 0. Weber in Heidelberg, pathologisch-anatomischen Studien unter Recklinghausen in Würzburg trat er 1868 als Assistent bei Virchow in Berlin ein und wurde schon 1873 als Nachfolger Th. Ackermanns Ordinarius in Rostock. 1876 ging er nach Göttingen, 1878 als Nachfolger Cohnheims nach Breslau, wo er am 3. November 1913 starb. Von seinen Arbeiten sind insbesondere die über Hämoglobinurie, Verbrennung und Transfusion, seine Entdeckung der Tuberkulose des Ductus thoracicus bei miliarer Tuberkulose, die erste Beschreibung der Fettnekrose des Pankreas (durch seinen Schüler Balser), seine Untersuchungen über Aktinomykose und seine experimentellen Arbeiten über die Regeneration der Leber nach ausgedehnten Resektionen zu nennen. Er führte auch die holoptische Methode in die Sektionstechnik ein. Selbständig erschienen: "Die Aktinomykose des Menschen", Berlin 1882, "Topographischer Atlas der medizinisch-chirurgischen Diagnostik", Jena 1901, "Untersuchungen über die exsudative Nierenentzündung" (Text und Atlas), ib. 1914."
