Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the global research initiative of 1891 and 1892, which in collaboration with the International Geodetic Association, aimed to improve upon the study of the variation of latitude. This effort involved the use of zenith telescopes on several stations across the globe to record the positions of a particular selection of stars. The data gathered was meticulously analyzed to delineate the movement of the Earth's axis over time. The author meticulously details the process of collecting and interpreting the data, providing valuable insights for astronomers and geophysicists. The work encapsulates a significant chapter in the scientific exploration of our planet and unveils essential knowledge about Earth's dynamic nature. Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book meticulously documents the 1891-92 Hawaiian expedition undertaken by the US Coast and Geodetic Survey. The author, an assistant in the survey, explores various aspects of the dense expedition, including gravity measurements, magnetic observations, and latitude determinations. Joining the International Geodetic Association's work, the author conducted a year-long study of gravity in Waikiki, then embarked on an expedition to the summit of Mauna Kea, an extinct crater with an elevation of over 13800 feet. The book also provides accounts of magnetic observations performed at other locations, such as Kahuku, Kawaihae, and Honolulu, on the islands of Oahu and Hawaii.
