Als solcher verstand er es, die Aufmerksamkeit des Fürsten Metternich auf sich zu lenken und wurde nun mit verschiedenen wichtigen Missionen betraut [.] Noch immer Günstling Metternich's ging er während der 'Hundert Tage' [.] in die Schweiz, die als Hauptbasis der Operationslinie dienen sollte, und erhielt darauf vom Kaiser als Anerkennung das Commandeurkreuz des Leopoldordens [.] Nach einer Erholungsreise durch Frankreich und Italien [.] wurde Steigentesch noch einige Male mit diplomatischen Aufträgen (Gratulation zur Vermählung des Kronprinzen von Preußen u. a.) betraut, mußte sich aber bald, durch bedenkliche Anzeichen der Wassersucht genöthigt, von allem öffentlichen Wirken zurückziehen, bewohnte im Sommer meist sein Landhaus Laa bei Wien und starb am 30. December 1826. - Steigentesch ist eine der interessantesten Figuren des beginnenden 19.
