NOT present] ; The 1968 second edition of Biological Science: An Inquiry Into Life (BSCS Yellow Version), edited by John A. Moore and published by Harcourt, Brace & World, was a seminal high school textbook emphasizing inquiry-based learning, molecular biology, and evolution. It aimed to move beyond rote memorization, focusing on scientific investigation rather than just facts. Key details regarding this 1968 edition include: Focus on Inquiry: The text and accompanying laboratory guide emphasized investigation, challenging students to analyze data and formulate hypotheses rather than just observing. Content and Structure: It was designed for 10th or 11th-grade students, heavily incorporating modern biological findings from the 1950s and 60s, including molecular biology and genetics. Reception: While lauded for promoting scientific thinking, some contemporary reviews suggested that despite the title, the text still contained a "good deal of telling" rather than pure inquiry, and it was quite rigorous. Impact: This BSCS text was considered a landmark in reforming biology education in the United States, moving away from descriptive biology toward a process-oriented approach. The book was frequently revised and reapproved for use in classrooms throughout the late 1960s and 1970s. ; 5 Excellent presentation of evolution, integrating synthetic theory. "Marred by progressionist ideology and claims of link to cultural evolution." ; BSCS "Yellow Version" aka Biological Science: An Inquiry Into Life ; FINE. Book.

A cornucopia of 'Gaslight Sci Fi', Supernatural tales (the six Heron mother and son, second series Flaxman Low tales are their first appearance in print (preceding the book) and the character is celebrated as the first psychic detective in fiction; also Fantasy and Adventure fiction. Notable stories include: The Monster of Lake Metrie (Wyoming), Adventures of Sirdir Mohammed Khan, The Lost Continent, a tale of the Fourth Dimension and The Story of Flaxman Low. There is also a wide range of non-fiction article topics including: cannibalism, a new art of self-defence, microbes, boomerangs, a New York diving torpedo boat, shark hunting, billiard tricks, snake dancers of Arizona, Baku, convict life, etc etc. Personalities featured include Nikola TESLA, Jan Szczepanik, Mrs E. Main, champion mountaineer, Alex Orling, Hoshi Kosetsu, etc. Nearly all articles are attractively illustrated and include the work of the celebrated illustrator Warwick Goble R.A. The volumes are in very good to near-fine condition, bright and clean with very few, if any, signs of use. No inscriptions and firm bindings - unusual in such thick tomes (680pp and 814pp) - very attractive hardback covers with art nouveau designs in colour and gilt blocking. Volume VII has some cloth wrinkling to the spine and very slight spotting to top edge; attractive decorated green end-papers and fine condition throughout. Volume VIII has the identical clean and bright binding with clean gray end-papers with minor spotting to the verso of the last page (Index) only. Some slightly bumped corners to both volumes. Overall, in remarkably good condition. Pearson's Magazine has an obvious transatlantic feel in the choice of topics and fiction authors, most of which carry a U.S. copyright notice no doubt due to content overlap with the U.S. Pearson's Magazine. Some additional postage cost (ie. for two volumes) for overseas. Now 50% off the original asking price applied.

This volume contains some of the gems of literature which the race has learned to love. Some of the 'old fashioned selections' and some of the most charming new short classics, are offered as a basis for study and appreciation. The average pupil will study his reading lesson with zest if he is given some definite work to do. This reader, published after World War I, begins with a poem, "The American Boy." It is a dialogue between a father and son about patriotism. According to the author of this reader, the influence of the story "The Poor Little Match Girl" "founded many an orphan home and organized hundreds of societies for relief of the worthy poor," which indicates an emphasis on philanthropy and social work during the era of the Social Gospel.80% of selections taught traditional values."-- Sharon Vincz Andrews ; signature of a youthful Gerald Grout, later a Kansas Ophthalmologist ; GOOD.
