Soft cover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. The music was first published in 1921 when it was a hit from the musical "Shuffle Along" by the two jazz composers, Sissle and Blake. This Victory Version has another lyric at the inside front page as a Truman celebration. Above the Victory Version is Eubie Blake signed in black ink. The music is three pages with piano and guitar chords. Featured on the front and back covers are b/w photos of Harry Truman. Music measures 9" x 12-1/4." Also found inside the music is a letter copy from Marion Blake promoting the book Reminiscing with Sissle & Blake and a 1976 catalog of Sissle & Blake jazz, ragtime, and vocal recordings. The music is in good condition. It appears that there was a tear at the lower front on Truman's arm but it has been mended or glued nicely. Smudges and light red bleed from the front are at the inside center fold; smudging on the first page of the song at the left side edge. Crease line at the front left bottom corner and light wear at the spine ends of cover. Sheet music.

Manuskript / Papierantiquität
Zustand: Very Good Minus. A type-written program and script for a musical revue starring some of the biggest names in Broadway musical theater at the time: John Raitt, Tammy Grimes, Dick Shawn, Larry Kert, Patrice Munsell, Cyril Ritchard. And not known for musicals but another big name: Lillian Gish. The script is dated September; the show opened in November 13 the same year at the St. James Theatre, and it ran until February 1, 1976. Our copy has the inked ownership inscription of one of the actors/singers in the production, Dennis Perrin -- perhaps not as well-known as some of the others, but a working actor on Broadway at the time. 4to. 29 by 23 cm. Six leaves followed by paginated leaves, with a few inserts but also missing numbers, reflecting undoubtedly changes in the script and choice of song during the rehearsal period. The revue was made up of generally well-known standards with scripted dialogue interspersed. We assume that there was plenty of extemporaneous dialogue in other places, and the scripted dialogue was never followed religiously, with liberties taken here and there even with the well-known songs. It would seem that the impetus for the show, though, was to pay homage to the old chestnuts at a time the American musical was undergoing some radical change -- the same year as this "A Chorus Line" opened, which offers the perfect counterpoint to what was being done here. The only institutional copy of a script for this revue that shows up on OCLC First Search is at the Library of Congress, which of course would have to have a copy. It is possible the LOC has several different versions of the script; we can't say what they have is identical to this one. One could think that the musical wasn't helped by performers past their prime, but that wouldn't be entirely true. Take Tammy Grimes -- her next show after this was "California Suite", a huge hit for Neil Simon in 1976, in which Grimes starred in all three of the plays making up the Suite. And other stars such as John Raitt and Larry Kert might not have been able to repeat their earlier successes, but that was not because there was anything wrong with their voices -- John Raitt voice still had beauty and heft when he performed with his daughter years later, and Larry Kert one could say had some near misses. And both were surely not helped by changing styles and attitudes regarding musical theatre. Ultimately the problem with a show such as this is that it was a potluck of second servings. These performers would have gone for a decent new book musical if one were offered to them, and likewise, the audience could too buy tickets for new book musicals such as "Chorus Line". Condition: Light to moderate wear. Limp Leather. Stab binding, with brass clasps.

James Reese Europe (18811919) was a composer and bandleader instrumental in the transition from ragtime to jazz, whose popularity and influence is impossible to overstate. He conducted the Clef Club Orchestra in New York City, which only played music by African-American composers and was the first Black orchestra to perform at Carnegie Hall. Europe's Society Orchestra toured the country with dancers Vernon and Irene Castle, popularizing ragtime dancing. In 1916, Europe enlisted with the 369th Infantry Regiment, also known as the Harlem Hellfighters, a primarily Black regiment that became one of the most highly decorated American units in World War I. Europe was a second lieutenant and led the Hellfighters Band, which toured France in 1818 and is credited with bringing jazz to the continent of Europe. James Europe died in Boston in 1919 when a member of his band, taking issue with Europe's criticism, stabbed him in the neck during the intermission of a concert at Mechanics Hall. Offered here is the sheet music for "Good Night Angeline", composed by James Reese Europe and his frequent collaborators, Noble Sissle (18891975) and James Herbert "Eubie" Blake" (18871983). The cover features a photograph of the Hellfighters Band above a portrait of Europe. We find four other copies of "Good Night Angeline", at the Oakland Public Library, the Library Company of Philadelphia, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture. Of interest to scholars of African-American musical and military history. Small ownership stamp to top margin, some light wear, overall very good. Sheet music measuring 9 ¼ x 12 ¼ inches.

Zustand: Near fine. Single sheet of Blake's stationery, bearing his address in Brooklyn, and printed with a lengthy list of songs and productions in which he played a role in composing. Letter in near fine condition, with flattened mailing folds. Original (torn) mailing envelope retained, with Vaughan's address in Hidden Hills, CA written in Blake's hand, and with a number of seemingly unrelated ink notations to verso. Autograph letter of more than 30 lines, including postscript, profusely apologizing to legendary jazz singer Sarah Vaughan for a remark he made to her, along the lines of, "when are you going to learn how to sing?" The letter reads, in full (slightly edited for clarity): Dear Sarah, I'm writing this letter to you and I'm trembling with fear. I shall never again joke with an artist any more. When I said to you, "when are you going to learn how to sing?" I was joking. I'm very, very sorry that you took my joking as a Slander [sic]. I've [told so] many of your friends, [speaking?] you + Lottie Gee. You both had, + you have got 2 ranges. I know another artist [who] had two voices. Anyhow you have it and you know when + how to use it. So when I joked to you, you knowing that I was a musician, I was joking. Please for goodness sake, don't think that I'm that [dumb?] to ridicule your [singing]. No. No. No. Please. One of your friends said to me to send you my [song] "Memories of You." Now I'm afraid to send it to you. Any how whether you believe me or not I love your style of singing, and please tell your husband I was only joking. [Sincerely?] Eubie Blake. P. P. I have two numbers I'd like to send you--"Memories of You," and "Calling Romance." E. B." Blake lived a long life, and had a long and successful career in jazz, from the Ragtime era all the way into the postwar period of free jazz and experimentation. He is perhaps best remembered as the co-composer (with frequent collaborator Noble Sissle) of the hit 1921 musical "Shuffle Along." Blake was generous with his autograph, and his long career in performance afforded him countless opportunities to give it. However, we've never encountered such a revealing and heartfelt letter; much less to such a significant fellow jazz figure. The final request--that Vaughan pass along the apology to her husband--is, in the opinion of this cataloguer, an example of the kind of soft misogyny that could plague even some of the most accomplished women in the performing arts.
