Shop sticker, 3cm closed tear to pre lim page that also has a large crease, bumped corners and spine ends, rubbed folds, crease to front d/j fold, some edge wear, small tear to d/j spine base, d/j corners are rubbed, small hole to d/j spine, the glassine plastic covering to d/j is peeling in several areas, some light coloured stains to front d/j. Li Ko-JAN, was born in 1907 in Hsüchou. Chinese painter, master of kuo-hua. Pupil of Chi Pai-shih and Huang Pin-hung. Li Ko-jan, who studied at the Art Institute in Hangchou, became a professor at the Central Academy of Arts in Peking in 1949. His lyrical landscapes (Spring Rain in Southern China, 1950s) and genre compositions (Boy on a Water Buffalo, 1953) are particularly sensitive to the force of life and are marked by dynamic construction and the tactility of forms.

First edition, first printing. Published by Spring Books in London, 1961. Without the dust wrapper. This is a near fine copy. The boards are without notable wear aside from slight bumping and separation at the top and tail of the spine, with very slight crumpling at the corners. The text blocks are free from foxing. The strength of this item lies in the inscriptions to half title verso. The inscription in royal blue ink reads: "For Bernard with affectionate appreciation of his valuable work for Peace News from: Vera Brittain, Hugh Brock, Geoffrey Tattersall (?), (?), Geoffrey Carnall, J. Allen Skinner, Arthur E. Fowler, Ivan Geffen, Harvey Christie (?), Derek Sadler (?), Alan Lovell. Each of the signees held various positions at Peace News, the Pacifist Magazine first published in 1936 to serve the peace movement in the United Kingdom. Though affiliated with Peace News, each signee also had their own background careers, notably the writer Vera Brittain, theatre pioneer Alan Lovell and trade unionist J. Allen Skinner. It is most likely inscribed to Bernard Boothroyd, the fourth editor of Peace News. Overall, this is a fine copy, albeit without the dust wrapper, of a fine set of inscriptions.
