Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Published in Amsterdam, (1811). 29.5 x 23.5 cm. vipp, 20pp of text (one page of text opposite each plate), and 20 hand colored aquatints, each of which is protected by a thin piece of fine paper. The book is ex-library, and rebound--that said, the binding is very sturdy and usable. The big caveat: each plates has a 25mm circular library stamp in the bottom right corner of the image. All of the numbered images are dated 1811; the frontis (which is rebound as though it were a numbered plate) is dated 1805. All plates (except for #1) have the additional London address of Colnaghi & Co ++ This is a classic work on the costumes and dress of the Netherlands. There seems to have been earlier editions of 1803-5, 1808, this edition of 1811, and another of 1829 (according to WorldCat). In the old says we'd call this a "scholar's copy". $750.

In den WarenkorbBeautiful collection of 68 hand-coloured engraved plates and aquatints, published by Evert Maaskamp (1769-1834), and etched and engraved by Van der Meulen, Maaskamp, and others. The collection, issued as the Tableau des principales vues, contains several series of plates, some of which were published by Maaskamp before. Some plates originate from Maaskamp's Nouvelle statistique historique d'Amsterdam (Amsterdam, 1812; Landwehr, Col. plates, 365), of which 11 of the 12 plates are present in our copy. Another series is one by G. Johnson, namely Karakterschetsen, zeden en gewoonten van Nederlandsche mannen en vrouwen (Amsterdam, E. Maaskamp, 1816; Landwehr, Col. plates, 323), of which all 9 plates are present in our copy. At least 5 other series of plates seem to be included. Some plates have captions in manuscript, which suggests that these were proofs before the captions were added. Others contain beneath the printed Dutch captions a French manuscript caption. The index-leaf begins with the title and address of the publisher, no further text is present. The index lists 64 plates; plates 14, 19, 27, and 50 as called for in the index (= 4 plates) are lacking in our copy. Landwehr mentions 8 extra plates, not listed in this index, numbered 2bis, 25bis, 26bis, 51bis, 65, 66, (and again) 66; 7 of these plates are present in our copy, only pl. 51bis (Village de Nieuwendam) is lacking. One plate (pl. 67 in our copy, with a panorama and profile of the canal from Amsterdam to Den Helder - the 'Noordhollands kanaal') is extra added and not listed by Landwehr. This plate is cut from the 'Kaart van het Kanaal' and mounted. In manuscript the title and the date ("16 December 1824"), identifications of the church towers and the names of the two ships are added. For a more detailed list, enumerating all the different plates and the series of which they were drawn from, please send us an inquiry. With an owner's inscription on the first endleaf: "Lt.Col. Nahuys to his dear friend Miss Ellen Hodges. Amsterdam 20 November 1825". This is Hubert Gerard Baron Nahuys van Burgst (1782-1858), brother-in-law of Rutger Jan Schimmelpenninck, who fought at the battle of Waterloo and then departed for the Dutch East Indies as lieutenant-colonel, where he was appointed resident of Djocjakarta. After his return to the Netherlands in 1823, he married for the second time in 1824. His second wife died in August 1825. On 20 November 1825 he presented our copy to Ellen Hodges and he would marry her in the next year in London on 28 December 1826. Another hand added: "Aan mijn dierbare achterneef en naamgenoot Catharinus Bissink, ter herinnering aan zijne liefh. oud-tante Kitty Babut du Mares Nahuys v. Burgst". This is Catharine Nahuys van Burgst who had married Jules Babut, seigneur du Mares (1827-1895). Binding worn around the edges, especially around the spine, but the text and plates are in very good condition.l Cat. In den WarenkorbSecond edition in the original Dutch and French, printed from the plates of the first edition, of the famous first Dutch costume book to cover the different costumes of the various provinces, edited by the well-known publisher Evert Maaskamp (1769-1834) in Amsterdam. The illustrations are much more than just costume plates, for they show people (mostly peasants, but also city dwellers, clergymen, soldiers and others) engaged in a wide variety of activities (selling goods, going to church, courting, etc.), though always in their best clothes. The costumes include those of the Moravian brethren. Each plate has an engraved caption in French and Dutch with a detailed explanation on separate letterpress leaves in Dutch and French. The extensive texts accompanying the plates describe the costumes and people in their cultural, historical, moral and social context. The introduction notes that the costume plates were drawn from life under the direction of Jacques Kuyper (1761-1808), engraved by Lodewijk Gottlieb Portman (1772-post 1828) and coloured by the now famous Dutch painter Jan Willem Pieneman (1779-1853).With an 1816 Dutch inscription and two bookplates, manuscript titles and captions in English. In very good condition, with only an occasional minor spot or smudge and with a small corner of 1 leaf cut off, not approaching the text, and nearly untrimmed. The binding is rubbed and the board edges tattered. A beautiful, important and culturally illuminating costume book from the Napoleanic Netherlands.l Colas 1681; Landwehr, Coloured plates 362; Vinet 2216 (2nd of 3 eds. listed). Contemporary boards, sewn on 4 recessed cords, orange paper sides edged with a gold-tooled roll, with a tissue guard leaf tipped in before each plate. Rebacked in red morocco (ca. 1900?) with "Dutch Costume" and fillets in gold. First London edition. First London edition. Hand-colored allegorical frontispiece (bound after the title) and 20 hand-colored engraved plates by Lodewijk Gotlieb Portman after J. Kuyper and others. [vii], [40], [1] pp. Folio. A rare English edition of this popular work on the costumes and customs of Holland, a fine copy. Originally published from 1803-05 with a total of 16 plates, the present edition has been expanded to twenty plates plus the allegorical frontispiece. The plates are dated between 1803-1807 and carry the imprint of both Maaskamp and Colnaghi, except for the plate 1, which bears the name of Maaskamp only. The letterpress explanatory text is in English while the plates are captioned in Dutch and French. An important study from the nascent era of European nationalism, the work presents an aspect of Holland which, according the "Explanation" at front, "as yet lies entirely uncultivated. This is the representation of National-dress, together with a proper description of the Customs, Morals and Characters, which stand in a near connection with them . This Province, which is always interesting, is so much the more of importance on a small spot of ground, which produces greater variation in this point, than almost all the quarters of the world beyond Europe." An English-language edition was published in Amsterdam in 1808, however the present London edition is far more scarce; we locate only a single institutional copy in North America and none in Europe.
