hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. In Czech and English. 1995 Zoologicka Zahrada (Prague, Czech Republic), 5 5/8 x 8 1/4 inches tall blue buckram cloth hardcover, no dust jacket (as issued), gilt lettering to spine, original stiff brown wraps covers bound in, 231 pp. Association copy: bound by the prior owner, Dr. Jim Dolan, who served as General Curator at the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park for decades. Very slight rubbing to covers. Otherwise, near fine. Scarce. ~H~ [2.0P] On the basis of blood samples taken from the horses at Askania Nova and of their serological analyses, all main breeding lines were reconstructed. The results of this international scientific cooperation have been taken into consideration in this, the fourth, totally redrafted edition of the General Studbook of Przewalski Horses. A total of 2,524 individuals bred in captivity since 1899 until the end of the year 1993 have been included according to the report sent from the breeding stations, including the acclimatization centres in China and Mongolia. Przewalski's horse, also called the takhi, Mongolian wild horse or Dzungarian horse, is a rare and endangered horse originally native to the steppes of Central Asia. It is named after the Russian geographer and explorer Nikolay Przhevalsky. Once extinct in the wild, it has been reintroduced to its native habitat since the 1990s in Mongolia at the Khustain Nuruu National Park, Takhin Tal Nature Reserve, and Khomiin Tal, as well as several other locales in Central Asia and Eastern Europe. Several genetic characteristics of Przewalski's horse differ from what is seen in modern domestic horses, indicating neither is an ancestor of the other. For example, the Przewalski has 33 chromosome pairs, compared to 32 for the domestic horse. Their ancestral lineages split from a common ancestor between 38,000 and 160,000 years ago, long before the domestication of the horse. Its taxonomic position is still debated, with some taxonomists treating Przewalski's horse as a species, E. przewalskii, others as a subspecies of wild horse (E. ferus przewalskii) or a variety of the domesticated horse (E. caballus).…

Scarce. ~H~ [2.0P] To the edition of the fourth General Studbook of Przewalski Horses (1995), a number of breeders responded with complimenting information, emendations of erroneous data and additional reports, and it was decided to publish this revised fourth edition of the General Studbook. This revised edition also includes the data on the horses reported in the course of the year 1993 and the data from the running reports of most breeding stations for the years 1994-1995 and part of the known data from 1996. In total, 2,968 individuals of Przewalski Horses kept in captivity since 1899 are registered in this revised fourth edition. Total number of living specimens (according to available data ) at the end of 1996 was 1,450 (581 stallions and 869 mares).
