There is some corner bumping and edge wear and the material has chipped. White numbers have been inked on the spine and there is slight spotting on the boards. Label affixed to the front end paper and the front hinge has seperated. Text is unmarked but has yellowed due to age. Numerous line illustrations and black and white photographs. Color illustration with tissue opposite of title page. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Ex-Library.

First edition. 547pp. Octavo [22.5 cm] 1/4 tan cloth with bluish gray cloth covered boards, gilt stamped titles on the spines, and gilt stamped vignettes on the front cover. Top edges gilt. The text block of volume 1 is cracked at p. 81, and again at p. 161. The endpapers of this volume are also split along the hinges. There is a thin 2 inch moisture mark to the backstrip of volume 1. The preliminary pages have a couple of previous owner's names in pen. Large fold-out map present in volume 1. The illustrator, Carl Eytel, was a GermanAmerican artist who lived in Palm Springs, California, and built his reputation for paintings and drawings of desert landscapes.
