(The full work was 202 portraits in two volumes). There is no title page or text, but from the size of the volume, it would appear to be one publishe…d in Brussels in 1833. Beautiful full red leather binding with gilt decoration to the spine and boards (including a crown to the front and rear boards. All edges gilt, with a beautiful embossed pattern to them. The book was bound by Alexander Banks Junior of Edinburgh. From the address of 5 Northbridge, we know that this work was bound between 1833 and 1849. Binding is a little darkened and rubbed only. The plates are a little foxed and darkened throughout, but still attractive. French monarchs and significant characters from history. Engravings include Charlemage, Marie Antoinette, Napoleon (5 different views), and surprisingly George King of England and Washington. 280 by 170mm (11 by 6¾ inches). "The treatment of strictures by electrolysis was pioneered by Mallez and Tripier. A strong current, applied to the stricture by a circular electrode,… produced a local destructive effect described as 'electrocautery'.
