Scholen worden, naast ouders als eerste opvoeders, wel aangeduid als 'tweede opvoeders'. In een grootschalig, langlopend onderzoek is veel material verzameld om antwoord te krijgen op vragen over probleemgedrag. Wat speelt zich af op de scholen, hoe ervaren leerlingen en docenten - en de schoolleiding - dit, welke invloeden hebben deze vormende jaren op de adolescenten, welke leerlingnetwerken vormen zich en wat is de invloed daarvan, welke verschillen bestaan er tussen scholen en waarom, hoe is de wisselwerking tussen docenten en leerlingen en welke rol spelen ouders in het geheel? Veel vragen dus, want een geschoolde, zelfstandige burger word je niet vanzelf. Uit verfijnde vragenlijsten zijn gedetailleerde antwoorden gedestilleerd, resulterend in conclusies en aanbevelingen. Probleemgedrag is het centrale thema, maar er komen ook positieve zaken uit het onderzoek naar voren: de meeste leerlingen blijken met plezier naar school te gaan en tonen zelf weinig uitgesproken etnische voorkeuren, ofwel het ontbreekt hen grotendeels aan discriminerende trekken. Frank Weerman is senior onderzoeker bij het NSCR. Hij promoveerde op een onderzoek naar sociale bindingen en delinquent gedrag.
