"The bird paintings of Jemima Blackburn have given her a place beside the great names of the art world and can be seen at Windsor Castle in The Royal Collection, in the National Portrait Gallery, the British Museum and the National Gallery of Scotland. During her lifetime Jemima Blackburn (1823-1909) was acknowledged as an ornithologist of some importance who corresponded with many of the most eminent naturalists of the period and was recognised by her peers as one of the leading bird painters of the day. Undoubtedly she had considerable skill and originality but her innovative method of painting 'from nature', as she described it, stood her apart from all the others who painted from dead or stuffed specimens."
