Michael Fairlie recounts his time as an army office during the second world war, taken prisoner at the Battle of Crete and afterwards serving as a translator in a prisoner of war camp; and his post war experiences as a colonial adminstrator in Africa, mostly Botswana and Swaziland, where he met many of the key players during a turbulent and politically shifting time.
