Hijo de un párroco de Dorset que le obligó a estudiar la lengua griega desde los seis años y una madre dulce que le transmitió el amor por la cultura clásica y el latín dejándolo huérfano a la edad de doce años, estudió en el Hertford College de Oxford donde se licenció en Historia en 1882. Después de graduarse, fue maestro y tutor, hasta que, gracias a su habilidad para los negocios y las lenguas, llegó a convertirse en el presidente de la Armstrong Whitworth Co., una de las mayores empresas armamentísticas del mundo.
