Hardcover. Zustand: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Type: Hardback First Edition. Hardcover Ex-Lib Book in Good Condition. No Jacket. Ms Farnham's (1883-1957) three books set in the U. S. Midwest are probably her best works--"Rebellion"(1927); "Lost Laughter" (1933); and "Great Riches" (1934). She won a $10,000 prize for her first novel, "Rebellion". These stories portray marriage, small-town society and busyness adventures typical of their time. In "Great Riches" she depicts the rise of a young man in a country town, with domineering parents and scheming women. This story is set in a small pioneer Mid-Western town on the banks of the Missouri River. It is a story of the reactions of a charming masculine personality to the women who "furnish his background", told with insight into the emotions which make or break a sensitive individual. His problem of who would make a "better wife", is worked out through the lives of well-born, entertaining, and intelligent people, whome he looks upon as his own family. The book is solid, tight binding, and worn. Clean brown cloth with swirl design, rounded corners, worn at edges and around spine and spine hinge, rubbed down hinge on edges, and spine head/heel. Text block edges browned. Lib pocket and card, stamps one end papers; date stamps on CR and half title pages. Sewn binding tight & solid. Pages generally clean with occasional smudges, no underlining or writing, with some browning and foxing on some pages. 297 pages. 5.5 x 7.8 inches. 1934, Dodd, Mead & Company, New York, New York, USA.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Rebellion' is a poignant and incisive exploration of the friction between tradition and the burgeoning spirit of modern independence in the early 20th century. Set against a backdrop of rigid social expectations, the novel centers on the intense psychological and social conflict between a headstrong daughter and her domineering, patriarchal father. This narrative serves as a compelling character study that delves into the complexities of familial loyalty, the quest for personal autonomy, and the shifting moral landscapes of the era.The story captures the essence of a generation in transition, illustrating the challenges faced by women seeking to define their own paths in a world often governed by restrictive, old-fashioned values. Through vivid dialogue and keen emotional insight, the work depicts the internal and external battles of a young woman determined to break free from the stifling constraints of her upbringing. 'Rebellion' stands as a significant work of domestic drama, reflecting the broader cultural shifts of its time while remaining a timeless tale of the struggle for self-expression and freedom within the family unit. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
