Softcover. Zustand: Near Fine. This scholarly monograph explains the probable literary and social sources of inspiration for Geoffrey Chaucer's circa 1351 poem Parlement of Foules. Chaucer's work was superficially a morality tale of avoiding temptation and error, but supported the idea of free will and, pointedly, the free will of women to choose their own mates. Most characters are foules (birds) presided over by goddess Nature, and this provides an acceptable veneer over sly satire and commentary about social customs and government. Farnham's monograph details the resemblance of Parlement to earlier tales and connects Chaucer's telling to the social customs of the day. This tall 8vo book is 9" x 6" and paginated 27,(3 blanks).
