A union co-worker suggested that he take up painting as a way to exercise his fingers and ease the pain. In 1945, Fasanella persuaded the UE to organize painting classes for its members at a local college. He was one of the first members to sign up for classes. Fasanella became consumed by art, and left labor union organizing to paint full-time. To pay the bills, he bought a service station and worked there. Fasanella's painting focused on city life, men and women at work, union meetings, strikes, sit-ins and baseball games. He quickly developed a style which spoke to workers and the poor through the use of familiar details. Fasanella improvised a quasi-surrealist style, depicting interiors and exteriors or past and future simultaneously. He painted canvases as big as 10 feet across because he envisioned his paintings hanging in large union meeting halls. 'I always felt embarrassed by the whole thing,' he said, 'but I had to do it.' File fold signed on the tab by Fasanella containing to a 1985 exhibit ("Urban Visions: The Paintings of Ralph Fasanella") at the New York State Museum, a clipped article from Sports Illustrated on Fasanella from 1956, a black-and-white glossy photograph (7.5" x 8.5") of "Fiesta", an oil painting by Fasanella which is titled and signed by him on the verso, a one-page typed biography of Fasanella that is signed by him in pencil at the bottom and contains a later note to a gallery owner and signed "Ralph" at the top, and a print of Fasanella's "Sunday Afternoon" on which he has revised the caption and printed his name on the front panel of the folder containing the print. Blacklisted during the McCarthy era, Fasanella was re-discovered in the 1972 cover story in New York Magazine that caused an upsurge of interest in his work and brought him national fame, the book Fasanella's City, and rapidly expanding art sales.
