It describes the distribution of breeding birds in the county and compares them with similar date collected twenty years ago. It is the result of over 7,600 hours fieldwork by 250 local birdwatchers and it reveals the extent of changes that have occurred in our breeding birds, often un-noticed by even the most ardent birdwatcher. Each species is featured on a double page spread with two maps, giving the distributions in 1967-1973 and 1988-1992, accompanied by text describing the species and the reasons for any changes and a specially commissioned line drawing by a local artist. In addition a further 25 rare, extinct or colonising species are featured. The important bird habitats in the county and the changes that have occurred over recent years are described. For the first time the changing patterns of agricultural land use are described and related to changes in bird distributions. Ref EEE4.

Some plates are by H.K. Halbot Browne [Phiz], though in a restrained style for him.Others are by J.H.Shepherd, J.Salmon , R.Garland and L.Woods. Collates thus:[vi], [1], 2-211pp. Originally published in 1838 as "The History of London" which had the same number of plates, so this may be a re-issue copy of the earlier book.A rare variant binding of scarlet, blocked cloth and a gothic design in gilt. The illustrator responsible for the plates, William Tombleson, was celebrated in his day as a fine topographical and architectural artist, and originally produced these engravings in the 1830s.While most earlier editions attribute this work to William Gray Fearnside, in this one authorship is attributed to Henry Gray Fearnside.While this edition does not provide a publication date, it can be identified as c. 1850 via WorldCat.Former owner's inscription to the front pastedown, with the name 'D. L. Cumming'. In a quarter morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Fading to the front and rear boards, with some wear to extremities.
