First edition. First edition. XVI p. Extremely scarce German emigration booklet by German pioneers in Adelaide, with accurate and useful facts about South-Australia. With detailed information about political, legislative and financial system, its natural resources and agriculture, also about wineries, the factories and the wages, the population and the German community and its facilities. Signed and dated in Adelaide on "Neujahrstage, 1874" by five respected pioneers of the German community in Adelaide: Friedrich Eduard Heinrich Wulf Krichauff (18241904) who arrived to Australia in 1848, became a politician and held various public offices. He was also involved in agriculture and according to this pamphlet he worked as a land agent. Joachim Matthias Wendt (18301917) who migrated to Adelaide in 1854 and became a renown watchmaker and jeweller. Heinrich Ludwig Vosz (18121886) who arrived in Adelaide in 1848, set up as a cabinetmaker and joiner, and was involved in the establishment of water-supply and drainage system of Adelaide. He owned a hardware store and was the first to manufacture paint in Australia. Very less is know about the other two signatories. Carl Georg Balk (18341876) arrived to Australia in 1854, emigrated from Syke bei Bremen and became a merchant, and Theodore(?) Bütefisch came from Rendsburg and also became a merchant in Adelaide. The brochure was reviewed in the contemporary German geographical journal, the Globus, in 1876 (Karl, A.). According to the article it was distributed in Germany for free, to facilitate the emigration to South Australia because of the need of railway workers. The review doubts the reliability of its content and warns that the prices of the basic goods in Australia are more expensive than in Germany in contrary to what the publication claims. The work has been listed among the current German geographical publications in 1875 (Koner, W.). In Ferguson's Bibliography of Australia only the second, revised edition, published in 1876, could be found, and we could trace only a copy of this, second edition in institutional holding, at the State Library of South Australia.
