Ferdinand Gonseth, philosophe et mathématicien suisse né le 22 septembre 1890 à Sonvilier en Jura bernois et mort en 1975, a enseigné les mathématiques à l'Université de Berne puis la philosophie des sciences à l'École polytechnique fédérale de Zurich de 1930 jusqu'à sa retraite en 1960. La Géométrie et le problème de l'espace, publiée entre 1945 et 1955, développe une épistémologie ouverte dite idonéisme, hostile aux dogmes a priori et fondée sur la révision progressive de toute connaissance par l'expérience. This is the first edition of Gonseth's major philosophical work, in which he addresses the crisis in the foundations of mathematics. The text is organized in eighteen densely argued chapters, beginning with the paradoxes of language and the construction of reality, and proceeding through the nature and foundations of geometry, arithmetic, and logic.
