hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Edition. The Visitation of the County of Cumberland In the Year 1615, Richard St. George & John Fetherston (Ed.) â" First Edition Publication London, Harleian Society (Printed by Taylor and Co.), 1872 Formatting 4to, pp. [viii], 38. Condition Report Good. The original cloth binding remains structurally secure, holding firm despite notable signs of age and handling. The rear board is heavily sun-darkened and exhibits discolouration, while the extremities show general bumping and rubbing. The spine ends are chipped, and there is visible cracking with minor splitting along the cloth of the upper joint, though the hinges themselves hold tightly. Internally, the text block is generally clean and legible, with minor age-toning to the margins. There are embossed 'Chester Public Library' blindstamps present on the preliminary pages, acting as the sole institutional provenance, but the pages remain entirely free from significant spotting, foxing, or dampstaining. Catalogue Note This volume constitutes the first printing thus by the Harleian Society, issued as Volume VII of their esteemed genealogical publications. The book features the distinguished gilt crest of the Harleian Society stamped to the centre of both the front and rear boards. The presence of the Chester Public Library blindstamps on the preliminary leaves provides an interesting, documented line of institutional provenance. Original 19th-century cloth-bound editions of this specific volume are increasingly uncommon on the open market, as they have largely been superseded by modern print-on-demand facsimiles. Conducted by Richard St. George, Norroy King of Arms, this meticulous 17th-century visitation provides an essential genealogical record of the prominent families and heraldic bearings of Cumberland. Edited by John Fetherston for the Harleian Society, this work stands as a cornerstone reference for historians and genealogists studying the regional nobility, pedigrees, and coats of arms of Northern England during the Jacobean era.
