Exterior shows some spotting and soiling along with edge and corner bumps/wear. Bottom edge of front board quite a bit of bumping. Internal binding is good, no hinge issues but the front boar…d has a bit of wiggle. Front pastedown contains the original owners name and date in the rear pastedown (and one of the appendix pages) has the date 3/28/1907 written in purple pencil. Pages are toned due to age and there is some scattered foxing and spotting present, with the worst being the front end page and title page (mainly the tissue guard). A large foldout map and the rear the book is present and is in good shape. Please note: this is a large and heavy book so it may require additional postage for non-US sales or priority mail shipping option.

Account of the Ziegler Polar Expedition 1903-05 led by Fiala. Party lost ship at Rudolf Island, northern tip of Franz Joseph Archipelago. Three attempts were made to reach the N Pole using both ponies & dogs to 82 N. At one point Fiala & his companion fell into a deep crevasse and were fortunately within reach of the rescuers' rope. The expedition is also noteworthy for the superb paintings and sketches made by member, Russell Williams Porter, who later became a distinguished inventor of telescopes and telescope design blueprints. The book measures 261mm tall x 175mm, and has 411 pages, 95 b/w photos + 3 illustrations, 2 color folding maps, index. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED.
