Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. Very rare book. It was published in 1914. And it came from the library of a very interesting person named James Forgie (I have several other of his books, his name is stamped at the top corner of the FFEP in this one). A little information about Mr. Forgie ends this description. Despite being published in 1914 this book is very well bound, no issues at all there. And the gilt lettering on the spine is very bright. And the spine ends and corners are mostly, and perhaps remarkably, unworn. And the pages are in very good condition, no soiling, no markings, no writing/underlining, no creasing. Everything so close to perfect. And, alas, not. There's a flaw. At least it's only cosmetic. On the front cover (first photo), as you can see, there are a number of ripples in the cloth, as well as what is possibly a circular imprint. I see a lovely night sky, a full moon, narrow clouds. All created by a big bang or a curious and careless guest of Mr. Forgie's spilling something on the cover. I've decided to exempt the owner from blame. But who was he? He was a New York tunnel engineer. He was prominent in the creation of the Hudson Vehicular Tunnel, The Holland Tunnel, the Mid-town Hudson Tunnel, and the Pennsylvania Railroad tunnels in New York. Many of his articles were published in his area of expertise. He had patents having to do with subaqueous tunneling, subway stations, and bridges, and material on the 'Forgie submarine'. He was awarded the Telford Gold Medal by the Civil Engineers (Great Britain) in "recognition of his paper 'The Laxaxalpam Aqueduct Tunnel in Mexico', and his achievement in engineering the subject of that matter". Very few men in this country have received that honor. His papers are preserved at the Smithsoniasn Institution, National Museum of American History, Archives Center.…
