The prototype of this book, Jay Mellon's African Hunter, was published in 1975. This was drawn from numerous contributors, based on experience gathered in the 1960s and '70s. The period of decolonisation from the 1960's onwards saw the spread of civil wars, chaos and economic crises, a spin-off of which was the disappearance of much large, edible fauna in an African countryside awash with military rifles and empty of effective law-enforcement.
