Softcover. Zustand: Good. French's Standard Library Edition. (printed wraps) [about one inch of spine covering missing at top of spine, otherwise just lightly worn; internally clean]. (stage diagrams) Translation/adaptation of a Hungarian play (original title "Szereten Egy Szinesznot"), about a famous actress who is pursued and wooed by a civil engineer. It ran for an anemic 20 performances in New York in the Fall of 1931, Variety judging it "a class production, but [which] does not afford enough fun" (which was no doubt true in comparison to another play that opened the same week and was reviewed in the next column: Mae West's "The Constant Sinner"). It was somewhat better received (or at least better reviewed) when staged at the Pasadena Playhouse the following Spring, and (here's some useless trivia if there ever was) a Los Angeles radio presentation of it in July 1936 marked the first public performance by Anna Sten after returning to Hollywood from England, to which she had decamped after her much-hyped but distinctly unimpressive stint as a Samuel Goldwyn contract star. The playwright, better known under the name Ladislas Fodor, had a decent career as a screenwriter in Hollywood during the 1940s, and racked up many additional credits after relocating to West Germany in the late 1950s; quite a few of his numerous plays were also adapted for films (although apparently not this one).

[963-13-4836-9] 1999. (Hardcover) Near fine in near fine dust jacket. 295pp. Illustrations, photographs, bibliography, index. A previous owner's inscription on the front free endpaper. "The last Hungarian work on the history of Hungarian culture was published between 1939 and 1942. After the communist takeover in 1947-48, under the ideological autocracy of Marxism, cultural history as a discipline came under suspicion, and was therefore pushed into the background; even the university departments were abolished. It was not until the 1960s that cultural history started gradually to regain its status". Time Period 18th Century. Contributors include Ivan Bertenyi, Istvan Bitskey, Ostvan Bona, Istvan Fodor, Istvan Gyorgy Toth. Revised by Christopher Ryan. Translated by Tunde Vajda. Locale: Hungary.
