Octavo, gray cloth (hardcover), x, 306 pp. Very Good, with light foxing, in a Very Good dust jacket. From dust jacket: For many decades after the Civil War the small towns and cities of the South held celebrations commemorating the long and fateful battle fought by the Confederation army. Organizations such as the Southern Historical Society, the United Confederate Veterans, and United Daughters of the confederacy sprang up and, acting as keepers of the past, perpetuated the memory of the Confederacy. But what vision of the Confederacy were southerners commemorating and promoting? Through an examination of memoirs, personal papers, monument unveilings, and veterans' reunions, Ghosts of the Confederacy shows how white southerners adjusted to and interpreted their defeat. It examines the trauma and legacy of defeat, particularly a persistent defensiveness over questions of honor and manhood. Casting aside the unreconstructed and resentful image projected in southern folklore, this provocative work argues that southerners realistically accepted defeat and rapidly embraced both reunion and a New South. The South's celebration of the Civil War in the 1880s and 1890s, rather than reviving sectionalism and creating a special social identity, fostered sectional reconciliation and supported an emerging social order. Foster contends that in this era, southers' fascination with the Lost Cause owed as much to social tensions resulting from change as to the legacy of defeat, and the public celebration of the war helped to make the South a deferential and conservative society. Most white southerners, despite their alleged heedless romanticism and obsessive love of the past, were far too realistic to let bitter memories get in the way of rebuilding their society.
