In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Very Good. OSBORNE, M.F.M. (Matthew F. Maury Osborne), FOUR items: (1) "Brownian Motion in the Stock Market" (Operations Research 7 No. 2 pp. 145-173, March-April 1959), cited 1928 times. (2) "Comments on "Brownian Motion in the Stock Market" and "Reply to Comments on 'Brownian Motion in the Stock Market" (O…perations Research 7 No. 6 pp. 806-810, November-December 1959). (3) "Financial Analogs of Physical Brownian Motion, as Illustrated by Earnings" (The Financial Review 19 No. 2 pp. 153-172, May 1984). (4) "Periodic Structure in the Brownian Motion of Stock Prices" (Operations Research 10 No. 3 pp. 345-379, May-June 1962), cited 635 times.[++] Offered here are four papers by Osborne (including three individual papers on Brownian Motion in the market plus a reply from Osborne to comments made on his papers). All are in the original wrappers the March-April 1959 and Nov-Dec 1959 issues of OR have had their spines expertly replaced, and have a couple of old rubber stamps from the Littauer Library at Harvard. The May-June 1962 issue is Fine, as is the Financial Review 1984 issue (except for the red marker circling one of the articles on the front wrapper. The four are housed in a beautiful custom-made half-calf solander case (which is new). Lovely set. [++] "Anyone who appreciates the scientific study of finance will recognize the name of MFM Osborne as a pioneer, visionary, and creator of our field. He was the first to discover Brownian Motion in Stock Prices, the first to study technical analysis scientifically, the first to note the lognormal nature of prices, the first econophysicist, the creator of automated market making algorithms 50 years before they became common place, the creator of market microstructure, and the discoverer of clustering of prices among other things."--Victor Niederhoffer, Daily Speculations, June 6, 2024 [++] "IT IS THE PURPOSE of this paper to show that the logarithms of common-stock prices can be regarded as an ensemble of decisions in a statistical steady state, and that this ensemble of logarithms of prices, each varying with the time, has a close analogy with the ensemble of coordinates of a large number of molecules."--from the beginning of paper #1. [++] Brownian motion (introduced by Robert Brown in 1827 when he observed the random motion of pollen grains suspended in water) is a stochastic process that describes the random movement of particles in a fluid, and it has significant implications for the stock market. In the context of the stock market, Brownian motion is often used to model the random fluctuations in stock prices. The theory assumes that the movement of stock prices is entirely random and that past price movements do not predict future movements. This assumption is known as the "efficient market hypothesis." One of the most significant impacts of Brownian motion on the stock market is the concept of volatility. Volatility measures the degree of variation in stock prices over time. According to the theory of Brownian motion, the volatility of stock prices is random, and it can change rapidly in response to new information or events. Another impact of Brownian motion on the stock market is the concept of risk. The theory assumes that all investments carry some degree of risk, and investors should be compensated for taking on this risk. In practice, this means that investors expect to receive higher returns from investments that are more volatile, such as stocks, than from investments that are less volatile, such as bonds. Overall, the theory of Brownian motion has had a profound impact on the way economists and investors think about the stock market. By assuming that stock prices move randomly, the theory has helped to develop mathematical models that can be used to predict future movements in the market. [++] "The Stock Market and Finance from a Physicist's Viewpoint", are among Osborne's 40-odd published papers which also include a very wide-ranging assortment of interests.

Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, London, 1883, vol 174: 551 573, 2 lovely plates.[++] "Most early workers in the field of foraminifera were learned gentlemen with great curiosity and broad interests who pursued microscopy as a hobby. Through their careful observations, Carpenter and Williamson laid the foundations of our understanding of morphology, growth plans and wall structure. They made their observations at a time when the zoological affinities of foraminifera were still under discussion. Because of the variability of form they took a broad view of taxonomic relationships, especially of genera and species, which strongly influenced later workers. J. Micropalaeontol. 31(2): 159 167, July 2012."--John W. Murray, "Early British students of modern foraminifera: Carpenter and Williamson." Journal of Micropalaeontology, 31: 159 167.
